I'm not entirely sure if this is true but according to THIS the total SMS revenues in 2005 were about 75 Billion USD which is much more than Hollywood box office,Videogaming, consoles and all software combined...SMS is a 90% profit business.

here in the Philippines. it is the major type of communication... a PULSE survey showed that with just the word "OK" or "K" (shortcut: SMS lingo) a network has already earned Php3-4M in revenue sales. and we got the record for the most sent SMS in Asia.

in addition to what rockygali said, our country is referred as The Text Capital of the World... 
i think the reason why text (or SMS) reached that heights is because it is cheap. people will not mind spending little if it will benefit them. in effect, it abides by the Chinese philosophy: it is better to sell cheap items in mass quantities than sell expensive items in less quantities
