ipod rocks! Its better than any(i think) mp3 player around. The earphones it uses is expensive but worth it for the quality it offers. So, its better than walkman phones.

I've listened to both and i'd have to say the w800i comes pretty close, but the ipod just sounds better.

BUT, i'd also have to say that the 'Creative Zen' is alot better than the ipod
I'd run a mile for a snowdevl!

Here is another thread on the same topic. As I said in that I’d again say that iPod is not that grate as some ppl say it is. With a good pair of head/ear phones the W800/K750 sounds close if not better than an iPod. Apart for the huge storage capacity I don’t think you’ll gain much by going for an iPod. If you are for all-in-one devices then W800 is definitely the way to go.

I think that depends on which headphones you use. The supplied ipod headphones are crap, while the w800i headphones are quite good. I had both (still have w800i) and the w800i is the best in my opinion.

I also believe the earphone quality makes a lot of difference. Has anyone tried comparing both using the same earphones/headphones?
resistance is futile.

Anyone who thinks that the iPod "sounds" great is probably tone deaf. Even the P800 had a much better DSP and audio output than ANY (including the new Gen 5) iPod. The only thing is that the headphones that come with the SE Walkman phones suck.

Get Shure E3s or better.. then listen again. You'l be very surprised to find that even some of the cheap china mp3 players sound WAY better than the iPod.

Only thing is... the iPod looks better.. and has a much better user interface than every other mp3 player on the market today.

I'm still annoyed that there is no silver/aluminum iPod (or no aluminum charger for Powerbooks).

With the hissing noise on W800, iPod is better.

i hope that the W810 addresses these hissings...

Sound quality on the iPod is pretty good. The Shuffle (the cheapest) has supposedly the best sound quality (makes no sense to me). Standard earbuds as supplied with the iPod have an extremely limited useful frequency range, so anyone comparing sound quality between devices using them needs their head read.

As far as mass-market audio devices go, the iPods sound is very good. Some of the competition, like the iRiver H300 series has even better, but most people don't notice as they use cheap headphones (usually earbuds). The Apple earbuds aren't expensive because they're good, they're expensive because they have the Apple logo on them and they're an iPod accessory - both factors that guarantee a high price. As far as earbuds go however, they are above average, but still by definition not great examples of high-fidelity audio reproduction.

That said, using my Sennheiser PMX-60 street-phones, the sound between my iPod nano and the W900 (which I'd imagine has comparable audio circuitry to the W800) is fairly similar. The sound from the iPod is a little bit brighter, but as to if it's "better" or just "different" I'm not sure. if you wanted to use the W800 in lieu of an iPod, I don't see you really having any issues. I've been using my W900 instead of my nano for a few days just for experimentation purposes. The nano is still more practical for the gym as the phone is a bit heavy in the pocket.

Good analysis of the iPods audio quality is in this review:

As much as I'd like to use my iRiver H340 and my Sennheiser HD-280 Pro headphones all the time, it's a lot of gear to cart around.

The sound on the iPod is way more powerful. Definately cant live without it, i only really ever use my fone for playing music through the loudspeaker, i always carry both devices. Plus i think the Walkman interface (compared to the iPod) could be improved abit-eg the ability to create playlists on the pc and transfer them,

they dont hurt....
fit in easily....
and when you start listening to music you just cant listen to anything else outside...
tht way the design is pretty well done....

and so is the sound quality....
