Memory Stick Micro = The End of Memory Stick Duo Pro? |

I was planning in buying a 2GB MSD but when M2 was announced i was wondering if MSD will not be supported on future devices..
MSD will get a price cut surely but is it worth the buy? how long will MSD last? |

devices such as cameras will continue to use msd primarily. The micro card is aimed at smaller mobile devices such as phones. Just as the Memory Stick is still used, so will the MSD continue.
However, as far as phones go, your MSD cards are useless from the K610 onwards (from K610 all SE phones use M2 memory)!

thanks for the reply.. this is such bad timing for me.. i just got my w900 a couple of months ago and now i learn that i wont be able to use MSD on future phones.. i know that the M2 will have an adapter to make it fit in a MSD slot but obviously it is an additional cost to buying the M2.. oh well.. |

re: future capacity of MSD, the memory stick pro (it also has a limit if 32GB, just like duo pro)but they still released duo's even though Memory Stick Pro is nowhere near 32GB in capacity. They won't wait for M2 to reach max capacity (32GB, again, same as memory stick pro and memory stick duo pro) before they start using it in devices.
For example, SE phones now come out with M2, so Duo's are useless in those phones. M2 is already up to 1GB, with 2GB around the corner. The W300 comes with a 256MB M2. Small consumer level Sony digital cameras will probably start to come out with M2 as well.
That said, Sony always bring out new card format's as parallel ie: M2 isn't designed to replace MS Duo - it is designed to complement duo. Some devices will continue to use MS or MSD, some will use the new format.

As long as you have the W900 you can continue using MSD. MSD will be around for a long time yet, just not in new phones that's all. The M2 will come with an adapter that allows you to us it in a Memory Stick slot, but there is no M2 to Duo slot adapter as such. Such a thing may be built eventually.
But if you want to buy new M2 memory, at the moment it will be useless for the W900.

It's a pity the things cost so much compared to SD and CF cards, especially as their speeds don't seem to be all that hot.

Ah, wouldn't the world just be a better place with just one memory card that you could use between all your devices! SD seems to be winning at the moment but if every could just agree on one card...

If i were you... I'll wait for the M2 2GB... as it is around the corner... from there you will be able to use the MS adaptor or the MS Pro Duo adaptor.. I believe they will come out with both forms... or juz one... the MS Pro Duo adaptor and from there you can insert it in the MS adaptor... 3 parts.. coz the MS adaptor has already exist... so its much easier to juz creat a MS Pro Duo adaptor than creating 2 new adaptors...
Thus u wont be afraid of not able to use it in future and current devices... coz u have the best of both worlds... new and backward compatible.

M2 was supposedly released with an M2 to Memory Stick adapter, not M2 to duo. No doubt both kinds will become available in due course, but for widest compatibility the adapter included with the M2 will be M2 to memory stick not M2 to duo. The adapter is included for use with memory stick readers. There is no such thing as a DUO memory stick reader, so it's unlikely M2 card will come with M2 to Duo adapters as standard.

but to think logically... its better to produce M2 to duo... its much easier and better... rather than making a whole new adaptor right....

but either way they have to produce a new adapter. And if they provide a m2 to msd adapter then for memory stick readers they'd also need to provide an adapter for MSD to MS as well. So that would be two adapters instead of one for every m2 sold - I don't think they'd bother.
Besides, it's a fact not conjecture that the first M2 sticks are coming out with M2 to Memory Stick adapters. So while an M2 to MSD adapter may be produced eventually (SE have claimed they won't), I don't think it will be provided with new M2 cards.
