How can I format the memory card on my memory stick? Will it keep the directory structure in place? Is it advisable?

I'm having issues with it and thought a clean wipe may fix it?

You can format it with your phone or with a pc using a card reader. The former will automatically add the file directories into your memory card while the latter will leave it empty, at least until you insert it into your phone. It's advisable to get a card reader cos transfer speeds are higher.
