On Sony Ericsson phones, What's the difference between the two? I seem to get to browse with either mode but wanna know the significance.

Http mode bypasses the wap gateway. This allows you to access Internet services without the gateway acting as a proxy. Http eats up a little more bandwidth as wap gateways can compress requests in to a smaller binary format.
