a K750i experience |

I've long been a SE supporter. I've been up through the ranks of those old colour Ericssons, I've had a T610 for the past couple years and towards the end of last year I got a K750i off the first batch into this country. This phone was excellent, an evolution on the T610 I was used to with a lot more punch. Plugged it in for the first time and let it charge but it would seem the supplied charger is designed for exactly one use because plug it into the phone for the first time and one of the pins don't return, rendering the charger useless. Then it seems the warranty doesn't cover chargers, this a minor inconvenience thanks to the nifty USB charger which has really proved to not be as slow and reviews have shown.
I had exactly two months of trouble free operation from this phone, I loved it. Then suddenly the top three number keys started to work erratically before stopping to work completely While the 4,5 and 6 keys would each do a double press for their own key and the one above it. Now let me add that during these two months of trouble free use the phone was extremely well cared for. I'd learnt for the design flaw of the T610 where the screen is flush and therefore very easily scratched so the K750i was from day one kept in a protective casing and kept well away from anything that could be of detriment to the handset.
I took the phone in for a warranty repair and waited quite a long time for the SE agent to look the phone over, finally got the call that my phone was ready so I rushed in to get it. Signed all the relevant forms and got the unit back into my hands only to see when switching the unit on that it was in fact no different to when I'd dropped it off with them. Closer inspection revealed that the agents had identified the damage as water damage and had therefore decided not to cover the repairs under the warranty. Now one can only speculate how this "water" got into the telephone. Perhaps a tiny bead of perspiration had struck the telephone at precisely the spot where it could bypass the protective covering and find its was through the phones casings and into the delicate electronics. Perhaps there was condensation caused by the covering that was designed to shield the handset from the elements. Perhaps the agent was using a loophole in SE's warranty so as not to incur cost to themselves.
So, with one foul bit of public service ends my long line of Sony Ericsson ownership. They did kindly offer me a wonderful deal where I could in fact buy another one to replace this handset that it would seem is not in fact designed for day to day use, thus rewarding them for not keeping to the warranty. So now starts my search for a new cellular telephone manufacturer to be loyal to. Perhaps Nokia has designed a telephone that can withstand day to day use without spontaneously developing "water damage", Samsung has also caught my eye. |

Your fight is with the service centre not SE. Obviously the phone was not "water damaged" and has just failed for some obscure reason - indeed it is covered by warranty and unless they can specifically point out to you where the water damage is they can't refuse you a replacement under warranty. Water damage is either visible or not able to be conclusively diagnosed. So if they are telling you it's water damaged, obviously they can't call any type of damage that has no obvious cause as "water damage", so if they can't prove water damage then they can't refuse to warranty it. Simple.
If they do show you signs of water damage, then it may mean they can't repair the phone but it still doesn't necessarily mean it isn't covered by warranty. The phone is designed to be resistant to sweat and other mild sources of moisture. I sweat all over my K750 and it's never come close to "water damage". So if sweat has penetrated the seals and "water damaged" the phone, then the water damage is due to a failing in the phones assembly, and therefore COVERED UNDER WARRANTY.
So don't accept shit from the service centre. Demand a new phone unless they can prove to you that the phone is water damaged by misuse.
