Ipod video or W900 ? Obliviously if you only want a media player then there is absolutely no point in spending twice on a phone with a video player; is there? I mean ipod has more memory, a larger screen and I think it supports more video formats etc..
However if you want an all one device (with a phone) then W900 is the way to go. So it depends on your needs. If I wanted a portable video player then I’d definitely buy a phone like W900 or perhaps something better like an i-mate that has an even larger screen with everything else (provided I have the cash ).

The essence of buying a mobile video player is to have it with me all the time while I'm on the go.
Imagine having to carry along a mobile phone, an iPod and a digital camera all at the same time....
Naaa the W900 is the winner for me. |

W900, for the very obvious reason that you just cannot make a call on an Ipod!

You fan boys make me laugh. Ipod all the way. I accept the argument about it not being able to make calls but if you already had a crappy mobile i'd buy an ipod instead of upgrading. Whats the point of being able to play movies and mp3s on your phone if theres no space! Once you see an ipod video played through a tv you'll change your mind.

The post above mine makes me smile.
The only benefits of the ipod video over the w900i are more storage space and a 2.5" screen versus the 2.2" w900i screen.
As far as space goes on the w900i, i have a 1 gig pro duo card plus the phone memory, and my phone contains:
- just over 200 160kbps AAC music tracks (can get 250 into the same space instead using ipod standard 128kbps AAC, but i like the extra quality) (820MB)
- about 15 500kbps music videos, 320x240 res. (190MB)
- 4 TV show episodes, ~25 mins each, 500kbps, 320x240 res. (390MB)
- a dozen applications (5MB)
- 3 dozen games (8MB)
- misc pc software like noiseware community edition, handy to have with the phone when i go anywhere. (10MB)
-assorted photos and videos i've taken with the phone (10MB)
Total = 1433 MB
That's a lot of stuff to get on a portable media device. Plus it lets me make calls, send SMS, use the t'internet, check my email, play games, run applications, sync with outlook, and remote control my winamp at home.
Buy a 2GB pro duo and you get even more on there.
Use all 1.4GB space for music only and you can get 435 ipod quality songs on there, or 30 albums! and that's using a high 14 track per album average.
So the storage space is a somewhat mute point, either device would need charging before you exhaust the available media. Of course the larger ipod storage has it's benefits, you could possibly get your whole collection onto it, and never have to transfer music to it anymore. Really depends how much music you own.
But aside from the fact the w900i does everything the ipod can do (as well as it's many other functions like calls, 3g, bluetooth etc etc etc), the w900i arguably does the ipod's functions better. The reason? Battery life.
Ipod video, quoting the apple site (http://www.apple.com/ipod/specs.html):
Quote:
| 30GB: Up to 14 hours of music playback; up to 3 hours of slideshows with music; up to 2 hours of video playback
60GB: Up to 20 hours of music playback; up to 4 hours of slideshows with music; up to 3 hours of video playback |
|
The w900i, sources being http://www.importgsm.com/product.php?productid=187&cat=0&page=1 and http://www.threegmobile.net/savvy/index.php/2005/11/21/sonyericsson-w900i-review/ and google:
Quote:
| Phone mode: 20 hours music playback
Flight mode: 30 hours music playback |
|
I couldn't find a quote on video playback time, but from my own experience i can get at least 5 hours video playback from my fully charged phone, and still have a little juice left for music and calls etc.
I'd think twice before you call people fanboys, because looking at the facts, the ipod video has in it's favour only two things, larger space and a 0.3" larger screen.
But the w900i atually lasts longer doing the ipod video's jobs, has no real shortage of space on it, and has a screen almost as large with the same resolution and from what i hear actually better contrast too.
On that basis alone it's the better portable media player. When you throw in the fact it's a phone, web browser, email client, organiser, runs apps, let's you play games, control other devices, i could go on, lol... it's a no brainer.

you can only compare their video capabilities... however you cannot make calls via ipod video... ipods hardware is technically geared towards better video performance. and of course audio too...
w900 is a freakin cellphone...

Just because the w900i is primarily a "freakin phone" doesn't mean it can't compare with the ipod's functions. I'm giving you facts here, to show it does compete and even better the ipod at the same tasks. Try coming back with some real information, hehe.
so far as the video and audio quality go, have a look here for the audio output quality of the w900i, it's at least as good as the ipod video's (5th gen ipod), and actually a lot better than all the previous 4 generation ipods:
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=839704
video quality, well, that's a bit different. The ipod supports h.263 and h.264 video. The w900i only supports h.263.
h.264 is the more efficient format, so technically it's better in that respect. Subjectively, there's little difference between h.263 and h.264 when watching a 320x240 video stream, it's very difficult to make the w900i pixelate a 320x240 h.263 video at 400kbps video data rate. For 99% of video, the w900i h.263 keeps the same visual quality as the ipod if/when it uses h.264. On top of that, the w900i has better screen contrast, so the w900i can actually reproduce the video slightly better than the ipod using either format. |
