Is the only way to do it at home with the use of that DSS-25?

You have to be connected somehow to your computer. A wired solution is preferred.

Are you saying a regular Sony Ericsson cable can do the job? Because I was under the impression that it could not be done this way.

I've tried the Sony Ericsson Update Service with the syncstation, but when I get to the step of taking off the simcard and turn the phone off, I always get the "no terminal connected". Any help?

Yes, but it's not working. The syncstation only recognizes the phone when it's on. Anyone?

the phone should be automatically turned on by the flash software. Does it work if you remove the sim but turn the phone on?

Depends on the model. Any phone compatible with the DSS-25 (K700i etc.) will require the DSS-25 rather than any other cable in order to upgrade the firmware. (With the exception of the DIY cable you can make, see http://www.davinciteam.com for details).
More recent models can be updated using the included cable.
If you want decent information, you'll need to mention what model phone and what model sync-station. Only the DSS-25 syncstation(K700i and older) or the DCU-60 data-cable (K750i and newer) will work for firmware upgrading. (Officially anyway).
The SE update service supports these models currently:
P900 ; Z600 ; T630 ; K700i; S700i; F500i ; P910i ; V800 ; K300i; K750i; W800i; J300i; V600i ; Z520i
If you don't have one of those then it either won't work, or there's currently no updates available (e.g. W900).
And no, you can't do it via bluetooth or infrared.

I have a problem with the new update service I have downloaded all the required software and drivers hooked up the K750i with the USB cable, I then run the update software and it goes right up to a point where I think tis a user agreement and you have to read it all then click accept? The only thing is the two buttons that are there to click on cannot be seen they are just white outlines , I understand that this maybe a PC problem regarding Macromedia player or jave drivers however I have tried removing and reinstalling all these and more and it just wont show anything I have even tried it on my laptop and my sons PC and they wont even run the bloody thing so I am stuck and really need an update as this phone is buggy as hell! Can anyone help please?
I get this
Then this
Then this is where im stuck at
Thanks

Not if you have none in your area.

Stupidly, SE has chosen to use Java for coding their update program. Java is full of inconsistencies and different versions. Try updating to the latest version of the JRE (Java Runtime Environment)
http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp
And see if that helps.
As for "only" getting 15Mbps - how much data did you think it was going to transfer!? Most firmware/software combinations for the K series tend to be 25-30Meg in size. It patches 2 separate things, the main firmware which is all the low-level stuff that deals with the hardware (think Operating System and drivers), and then the integrated software which includes the user-interface and the stuff you actually use (making calls/SMS, organiser etc.)
