According to a report on the BBC, machines infected by a destructive virus known as Nyxem will see Office files such as Word, Powerpoint and Excel plus Acrobat files deleted on February 3rd.The virus will also try to disable anti-virus software to stop it updating and can also disable the mouse and keyboard on infected machines.

Just update your anti-virus software and to scan the whole system.

Also, this virus only arrives as an email attatchment, emailed link to a website which contains the virus or MSN / Yahoo messenger file transfer. In emails, it uses the rather dated technique of promising free pornography so the golden rule applies: Never open unsolicited attatchments, don't click on email links to free porn and in messenger, don't accept unsolicited file transfers.
This virus has been around for a while now, it releases it's payload on the third of every month (not just February) so as axxxr says, get your antivirus up to date and get scanning now!

Microsoft in an e-mail Tuesday warned users to update their antivirus protections against the Kama Sutra worm, the mass-mailing virus slated to begin corrupting files later this week.
In its advisory for the Kama Sutra worm, otherwise known as win32/Mywife.E@mm and Nyxem.E, Microsoft warns users to be wary of opening unknown attachments.
The worm, which infects a user's computer once an attachment is opened, may also spread over writeable network shares if there are blank administrator passwords. Users hit with the worm may find a number of their files permanently corrupted on the third day of every month, beginning this Friday.
Like other worms, the Kama Sutra virus attempts to disable security software that is loaded on users systems, Microsoft warns.
Microsoft is advising users to update their antivirus software, as well as remain cautious when opening unknown attachments and use strong password protection.
Security experts estimate the worm has infected at least 500,000 PCs, often using pornography as its enticement.

Virus' are generally caught by idiots, people that have no clue and those that try and download things for free.
In my 14 years on the internet and previous time spent on BBS i have not once had a virus infect my system.....well not one that I have not deliberately grabbed in order to reverse engineer.
So people out there...use some common sense. |
