Mine freezes too; I think cause there is 'a lot' of memory for the phone to 'scan' or something, so it takes longer to load...

FAT16 is faster but larger cluster sizes are used meaning more space is wasted (especially for lot's of small files). But the typical use of a phone memory stick (including themes, games, videos, mp3's etc) will not waste a significant amount of space using FAT16.

If you format the memory card using windows, make sure you select FAT, not NTFS (NTFS is not readable by most phones). When you format using FAT, Windows will use FAT16 if the partition is 2GB or less. From 2GB to 32GB partitions FAT32 will be used. FAT16 has a limit of 4GB in windows NT based operating systems, however most portable hardware (and win98 and earlier) will only be able to read up to 2GB FAT16 partitions.

a bit off-topic, but somewhat related. i also want to ask: is the MS DUO used in P900i/S700i using the same format? i don't want to be depending on a P900 just to format my phone's memory stick...

P900 and S700 both use fat, however neither phone can read Duo Pro cards, and therefore are limited to 128MB capacity.

This limit is due to the architecture of DUO memory cards and readers, and has nothing to do with the type of file system used on the card.

But yes you can format a duo card with fat using windows, and it will be readable by the P900 and S700.

i see... i used to be afraid to have my memory card formatted on a PC because i thought doing it will make the card readable (turns out, this was half-true, because formatting by default on a FAT32 file system will create the same format). but since FAT16 (NOT FAT12 or FAT32, as seen here) is the format used by my phone, there is nothing to fear about.

in addition, you may want to look at this article from Microsoft discussing FAT32 format on a memory stick using Windows XP.

thanks for the info max_wedge!

So is there any harm if I formatted my Memory stick using FAT32 on my XP computer and am using it in my phone? Does this mean lesser performance and/or response from my K750i?

So far I have been doing well with FAT32 and if it really is a big issue - this FAT vs. FAT32 thingy then I might backup all the contents of the stick to my computer and re-format the stick to FAT.

Please advise.

It theoretically would run faster access on FAT16, but in practice it may not be a noticeable difference. The only way to find out is suck it and see.
