Have tried searching but ended up more confused.

Was on holiday earlier this year in Canada with a k750, it did not work so I bought a simcard over there, then I was connected (rogers I think) Question is, If I had a quad band phone (razr v3 for example) would my U.K. Orange sim card have worked ?

It depends,

to use your original network sim, your network has to have roaming agreements in those countries. (You may need to inform your network you're travelling as well, vodafone here usually has to flag you for roaming :/)
