Hi,

Since the day i purchased sonyericsson w550i, i have transfered many songs, picts, etc. Yesterday as i was trying to transfer some music tracks using the Disc2Phone software, i noticed that it was not showing me the music list (existing music list which usually appears on the right side). I opened the removable drive and opened the MP3 folder in which the songs are copied by deault. There are some strange files which i have never seen before. 1 file shows its a dll (system) file. The other files name is like a symbol, e.g. "sMh{╙╫.≥¿≈". I am not able to delete these files as they are protected.

Is this a virus or anything else? how do i get rid of them?

Please helppp........

Thanks in advance.

check the memory status, that all the archives you have sum up the used memory. perhaps the archives you see in your computer are hidden in the phone but it still ocupies memory, that's why I tell you to check.

w550, does it have mem card or internal mem? hang it........okay i'm back, 256 internal mem only.

If you can see it as a drive then I'm guessing you can format it. That would I hope not format your "phone", they wouldn't be that stupid. At worst it might nuke contacts and messages so save these first.

Guys,

Thanks for your replies. Yes, these files occupy small amount of memory on the phone. I have tried all ways of deleteing these files but in vain

"max_wedge" your idea is good but tell me, when the mobile drive is available in my pc, i am not able to delete the files as they are protected. So will it allow me to format the drive? Also, will the format clear the entire memory? W550i as u said has only 256mb of internal memory. So will the drive format destroy the entire mobile software?

If you can, please tell me more about the format procedure ...

thanks.

it's unlikely that even your contacts or messages, let alone the mobile software itself, would be stored on memory that could be easily formatted by the end user. It's likely that the memory that is available for use as a removable drive on a computer is for user content only, meaning ringtones, games, music, video, pictures etc.

Contacts and messages may or may not be included in that. It's best you download a manual and checkout howit says you should manage the memory and whether it can be formatted. However I expect it's quite safe to format the memory using either windows or the phone itself.

That said, I've never played with a w550 myself. If it was me in your shoes and I couldn't get sense out of the manual or google, I'd backup all my contacts and messages, save all my content from the card on the computer, then I'd go into windows, right click the drive (for the phones memory) and click "format"

And yes, mostly a format will delete anything, but also I don't think the strange name files you are getting are "protected", it's just that because the data is corupted, the phone reads it as undecipherable and calls it "protected" Another reason I think it can be formatted, one of the ways of maintaining the usefulness of mass storage media is the ability to format it when the file system is corupted.

Hi guys,

taking your suggestions yesterday i formatted the drive. I only had to back up my music and photos. All the corrupted data is gone and i have even restored all my files. My sms, other system settings were untouched.

Thanks a lot !!

Rather than formatting there is an easier way from what i have found . i had recently dropped my phone . after which these junk files showed up in my theme folder . impossible to delete and impossible to overwrite in terms of other data in that same folder space . i was in dul minds when you said you " formatted it " . i wondered how .

in due course what i tried was to try and check the disk for errors . ie chkdsk in windows . or scandisk , whatever u call it . and also try and recoever bad sectors . did that , also defraged my disk .

it works beautifully !!!!
