Sony Live 2006: Sony Ericsson to debut Location Free TV compatible phone

In Lisbon Sony also made some big announcements about its TV on the move system Location Free TV. It confirmed a UK launch for the service for PSPs and laptop PCs which the company says will be before the summer. A Sony rep also said that Sony Ericsson is about to deliver a phone that will be compatible with the Location Free TV system. Presumably the phone will include Wi-Fi which makes it most likely to be the next generation of the SE smartphone the P990 which goes on sale next month. However given that the data speeds of 3G are fast enough to support TV streaming it may be a different 3G-only non Wi-Fi handset .

Launched in the US in December Location Free TV enables PSP owners to watch remotely via Wi-Fi whatever is showing on their home TV. The system consists of a decoder box, which sells in the US for $350 that plugs into any video device and a broadband connection. The box then takes the video output and then streams it over the web to the PSP. So you can hook it up to your Sky box and wirelessly stream a live football game across continents if you wish.

i think...from ur tv,the video signal goes to the decoder box which sends to the internet via the broadband connected to the box.and ur psp can access the tv content through wifi.

The concept is too complicated for Joe Bloggs to understand...why couldn't they just simplify along the lines of what BT is doing with Mobile TV?

@Brix. Yeah, that seems the simplest option. It just uses part of the existing DAB spectrum.

@goldenface: Using DAB to transmit video is quite a novel idea. Some days I wish I could be in the UK, if only for the tech, but then again I would have to deal with smelly people on public transport and shitty weather most of the time except for 40 days a year.

This is (IMO) SE's repy to nokia's DVB-H technology powered Phones (Like 7710 etc.). I like the idea of LocationFree better then DVB-H, simply because, IP Telecasts are the future, not RF based video transmission.

@johnex: I very much doubt it will. But then again, if the psp can, why not?

@Brix I know what you mean. I would stay where you are if I was you, he he he.

Using the DAB spectrum seems the simplest idea to me too, rather than downloading tonnes of data from a network which is patchy in most areas anyway. And of course, this would be available to more handsets in more areas. Do you think it might be as simple as downloading a java application on to your handset, the way you might download the cnn/mobile application onto your phone? I hope so.

@goldenface: I've got no plans to move just yet

Last week a 3G mobile tv service was launched here, similiar to the one offered by Vodafone.
Catch though is that you'd have to pay just under £1/day to watch a channel.
