John, don't know the precise speed but it does have a variable speed. The Register (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/12/30/singlechip_rtos_phones/) claimed the P990 was to use a new TI chip that was effectively 4 or 8 times faster then the previous model. While other reports say the P990 uses a new Philips chip called the Nexperia.

Please note the overall performance of Smartphone is not just a function of the CPU but also the flash memory and caching techniques used. I use a HTC Universal (XDA Exec) and even with a 520 Mhrz CPU if you don't make a number of tweaks the device can appear to be no faster than the Nokia 9500 which has a 200 MHrz CPU.

208 Mhz is in the P990i and several other new P-series. It will be the
major processor for the P-series.

You have identified the problem as I have pointed it out in my posting from last year ! I thought that every body will join me and email SE with our concern. The pre-release model suffered of exactly that - slow speed and a few stability problems which SE promissed to sort out before the final release. While the software can be 'tunned' to increase the speed only a faster core chip will really make a difference. Lets hope for the best thou, I am just a bit 'uneasy' about the prolonged delay, after all the phone has been envisaged/designed almost a year ago !

"Mhz" is a useless measure of speed across different chips.
The true measure of the p990s speed will be in its usage.

If it has a dedicated GPU as well then that also takes more work off the cpu.

How fast it is compared to others can probably be benchmarked when its out. Though besides jbenchmark, is there any other benchmarking software thats also multiple platform?

The other main issue is the flash memory speed. I have said many times that the HTC Universal with a 520Mhz processor is not 2 or 3 times faster than most Symbian devices. No way!

I ment the other way around though. The P990 if it has variable cpu clockspeed, and "new TI chip that was effectively 4 or 8 times faster then the previous model" then it should add up to around 600mhz or so right? (150mhz times 4 )

There is no reason to speculate. We^ll have to wait and see. I do not think it will be out before March, because of the new OS and a lot of new user apps. software has to be written for it.
