From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"W-CDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) is a type of 3G cellular network. W-CDMA is the technology behind UMTS (a.k.a. 3G) and is allied with the 2G GSM standard.

More technically, W-CDMA is a wideband spread-spectrum 3G mobile telecommunication air interface that utilizes code division multiple access (or CDMA the general multiplexing scheme, not to be confused with CDMA the standard)."

There are 2 types of implementation for W-CDMA:

1. FOMA - (Freedom of Mobile Multimedia Access), is the brand name for the 3G services being offered by Japanese mobile phone operator NTT DoCoMo.

2. UMTS - (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System), which uses W-CDMA as the air interface for the 3G successor to GSM.

The world's first commercial W-CDMA service, FOMA, was launched by NTT DoCoMo in Japan in 2001. FOMA is not compatible with UMTS. But the effort for migrating the FOMA specifications to UMTS are indicated by Japan.

Therefore, for the layman and for our purposes W-CDMA = UMTS since FOMA specs are being tweaked towards UMTS.

Please note that despite the similarity in name, W-CDMA has very little to do with CDMA. For simplicity's sake please refer to the analogy below:

GSM vs. CDMA (or it's latest version CDMA2000)

For Data: (from slow to fast)
GPRS, EDGE, UMTS (W-CDMA) vs. 1xRTT, 1xEV (or EVDO)

Hoping it's clearer now... [addsig]

UMTS standard uses WCDMA as its wireless technology. Basically, they are the same (only if viewed from the European version of wcdma, Japan's FOMA 3G also uses wcdma but is incompatible with european wcdma)
