Hi!
Can I see the clocks display easily, in the dark? i.e. do I have to hit a button to illuminate it?

Yep, the flip on the top is pushable and when you push it a blue led appears on the screen which glows and shows the time, quite funky.
As the pic shows below, the lid opens and you can set the alarm etc.
