For a while now I’ve been thinking about one of the biggest frontiers that mobile phones have broken through since the colour screen.
The memory card.

But one thing that bothers me is the slow and tedious wait for a certain memory card, the Memory Stick Duo (Pro).

For example, the SD card is almost the same size as the MS Duo. But why can I easily buy a 4 GB SD card and not a 'currently unavailable’ 4Gb MS Duo??

It also happens that the 2 GB MS Duo is around the same price as a 4 GB SD card, all be it, almost similar size.

So anyone else out there fed up of Sony(Sandisk) faffing around and ripping us off, please fill add your thoughts to this matter...

I still have a problem with the price of these cards. If they were cheaper wouldn't more people buy them ? i'd probably have a couple of 2gig cards if they more reasonabley priced

Yes I appreciate you have to add your markup to a product, but are these guys being a little greedy ? Cheaper product would create a greater demand which in turn would increase the amount of units made thus reduce the manufacturing cost enabling sony to sell them cheaper and still make a reasonable markup.

sony do like to keep there exclusivity by using a higher markup, but when its down to qulaity products i dont mind, but a memory card is a memory card, production cost wise.. [addsig]

Yeah, I agree. The only reason I'm holding back on buying one is because of the price. It doesn't make sense when you compare the price per Mb with other cards like SD.
Its too bloody expensive and I think its stupid too. If they lower the price, I won't mind buying a few sticks too. Like you guys said, if they lower the price, then there will be more units sold !
Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I agree with you all. This is typical Sony proprietary game playing. Make devices with a different expansion type, claim it is better than existing methods then charge twice as much for the media.

It irritates me. SonyEricsson themselves would have little choice in the use of Memory Stick media. 1. Cheaper to incorporate memory stick ports into devices because of the Sony connection 2. Sony no doubt have SE tied up with contracts that force them to use certain Sony technology.

Memory Stick media has some advantages - duo pro sticks are smaller than all other memory formats excepting micro media (starting to be used in phones and similar); also MS media is sturdy and reliable. When it includes MagicGate, the media can also be used to encode ATRAC audio, but atrac is dying a death and is useful to a niche market segment only.

In fairness, part of the extra cost of the card is the extra capacity that holds the MagicGate instructions. It's a shame that you can't get non-magicgate duo pro cards (you used to be able to get standard size non-magicgate Memory Stick's), as those cards are a lot cheaper than the magicgate versions.

The massive higher cost of MS media is a real issue, and Sony really could benefit from being more generous about it. Like you guys have said, I would also buy more MS media if it were cheaper.

Man, forget about trying to get a 4GB MS Duo, I can't even get a 2GB one! Sure, I can buy a Sony one that's half the speed of Sandisk, but everytime I try ebay (or anywhere else) they keep pushing back the release date for the 2GB. They've got it down for release on January 15th now!!

Its all true but i think Sony can charge so much for these becasue w need them, so we will buy them. You cant have a phone with no memory card.
