A new mobile phone aimed at under 10-year-olds has been unveiled.

Described as a new children's "safety phone", the TeddyFone claims to have up to 10 times fewer radio frequency emissions than standard handsets.

The device which can be pre-programmed by parents, has no screen and only four buttons.

Its unveiling comes on the same day new research conducted by Canvasse Opinion on behalf of TeddyFone Ltd, also revealed that health fears top a list of parental concerns about children's mobile phone use.

The impact of radio frequency emissions on health was the prime concern for 35% of respondents while only 2% of 1,232 adults questioned had no worries at all about under-10s having mobiles.

Paul Leishing, co-founder of TeddyFone Ltd, said: "For that significant percentage of parents for whom child safety far outweighs perceived risk, TeddyFone offers the safest alternative to a traditional mobile on the market for that added layer of safety and peace of mind

No, I don't think under-10's need a mobile, they need more responsible parents.

My 18-month-old son thinks my K700i is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I can't leave it anywhere.

This really doesn't make sense to me. Just ... why? Why would anyone want to give there 10 year old kid a phone? More to the point, what 10 year old lad would be seen dead with that teddybear cover

I think your second point is valid but I suppose it won't be a surprise to anyone that my kids have mobiles before age 10. They were cheap scungy ones and only used to call them directly, or for them to call us, when they were playing around friends houses. they never used them to call anyone else

10 year olds lived fine the last 2000 years without a phone. Unless of course you live in a neighbourhood with convicted sex offenders. Then it would make sense.

the same could be said for us though. i think its quite a good idea, parents can keep in touch with thier kids, the kids can call to let them know they arrived safely at a friends house etc.
