While the roumors are going that the p800 will hit the market in january 2003, SE says it will be here (in the Netherlands) in october

Ik heb uit verschillende bronnen vernomen dat de P800 is vertraagd tot Januari
2003. Omdat hij gepland was voor q3 dit jaar en toen was verschoven naar q4, is
dit wel heel raar. Kloppen deze berichten of komt de telefoon nog uit in q4 van
dit jaar?

gewoon standaard bericht van SE in nerderland over de p800 lijkt mij
i've got the same anwser 3 weeks ago in my email, i think it's a standard p800 note in holland..
but hey... you never know.. maybe we see it in the stores in the end of october  |

Latest semi-official word from SE Netherlands is December release, at least that is what I heard today. This morning I played with a P800 prototype for 15 minutes or so. It is now on show for the public at the Sony showroom in their headquarters in Badhoevedorp. It's behind glass, but a friendly sales rep took it out and let me play with it.
I was impressed with a lot:
- the form factor; this device doesn't feel bulky, it fits nice in the hand
- graphical interface, screen quality and scrollwheel operation are smooth
- Applications are o.k. Calender, web browing, contacts are all well done
- handwriting recognition was very accurate without training
- seems to be the perfect combination of pda and phone
What I didn't like:
- the numeric keypad doesn't have tactile feedback, sometimes number pressings weren't recognised. The keypad doen't sink in the device, it kinda sits on top. I think when I buy one, I will remove the keypad and use the software/contacts dialing.
- the stylus is like a cheap ice-spoon, it does't glide into hole (like XDA) but has to be attached on the side, which didn't go smooth.
Overall I was very impressed, it matched my expectation. I will definitely wait for this device to hit stores in December. There's just no comparison. I played with a Nokia 7650 while in Italy. It's clumsy, bulky and has i tiny screen compared to the P800. |
