Maybe its because SE want there product working 100% before they release it. My company put our phones through testing before we sell them, now nokia phones repeditely fail testing our SE phones go straight through and in the uk its going 2 be about £400 on contract

BTW, by the time most of us will be able to get the P800 (and that seems to be Q1 2003.), Nokia will supposedly already have a 3G/2.5G/2.G phone available on the market and for only 500$! It's still only a rumour but check it out:

Too bad for SE...

why would you want a 1st gen 3g phone when you dont have a 3g network (and wont have a decent one for years and years)?

Hutchison 3G in the UK are still claiming they will launch in November 2002. All they need are some 3G handsets!! Seriously though, they will have a network up and running early next year, and there will be few people who can lay out 600 Euro on a handset that they will be looking to replace within 6 months. What would I rather have, really cheap call charges (this is apparently how they will tempt people onto their network initally) and high data bandwidth or a P800? Tricky for me, being a gadget lover and software developer, not very tricky for about 90% of the population. It's now or never.
This whole thing must be embarassing for Sony especially. When the world's most well known electronics manufacturer can't release it's flagship phone on time, the first fruits of it's partnership with Ericsson, you really do have to wonder.
I think the problems revolve around the memory stick Duo, they screwed up big time trying to add that at the last minute. I'm guessing that part of the problem is that the Symbian OS7 seems to have no filesystem to speak of... Data is just saved automatically when you change apps. To get the Duo working they will need to add their own filesystem type functionality and add it to all the built in apps, at the same time possibly complicating the UI. If they had just released one without the MS then brought out an updated version, everyone would have been happy. |
