Theme file size help |

Hi, I've made a theme and I'm really happy with it apart from 1 thing, It's 1Mb!
Does anyone have any idea on how I can reduce the file size?
Most of them have some transparency so I can't save them as jpegs to reduce the file size that way.
I'm using fireworks to create the png files, are there any ways in that to reduce image size?
If I can get it to a reasonable size (<500kb) then I'll stick it up on here.
Cheers,

You have got to ask yourself what exactly is it that takes up all those bytes. I'm guessing a few transparent png files won't break the bank so it must be the standby animation, right? Did you include a ringtone?
Maybe you can put it up so we can take a look?

Thanks for the reply tourist.
I'm at work at the moment but I'll post up some file sizes when I get home.

I did a bit more research and looked at the export settings in Fireworks. I'd been using the saved versions of the png files rather than optimised versions.
Well I got home and optimised all of them reducing most of them from aroung 40kb to under 1kb.
This brings the theme in at a nice 401kb, which, considering the anim isn't bad.
I've uploaded it to the themes section so hopefully in a few days it should be on there. It's the Manchester City one.
Cheers for the the help tourist, sometimes just bouncing ideas around helps.

So it were the png files after all, huh? Well, glad you figured it out. Your theme is looking pretty consistent. |

save them as PNG8 files with the minimum colours necercery for the image. Fireworks' native file system is PNG, and if you sue them, they will work, but hey contain all the editing info in the files like vectors etc. so you can go back and edit it.
You did the right thing to use the exported files, just check that the files you are exporting have their export settings tweaked to the max. You should be able to shrink it some more.

That's what I ended up using - PNG8
It caused a little bit of banding on the gradients but it's not really noticeable when it's on the phone.
I used jpegs for the desktop and gif for the animated standby.
Now that I've got all of the shapes and sizes sorted it should make creating new themes a LOT easier!
It's already had 300+ downloads from Esato! WooHoo! |

It was actually made for my own v600i (voda k600), but it looks like it will work on the k750 and the w800. Its under both of those phones too in the themes section. |

Nice job mate - about time a proper team got a theme
My K750 gave a "file corrupt" message when I first loaded it. Opening the theme in the SE theme creator, changing the 'phone to K750i and then saving the file again resolved that problem though.
