dissapointed with the w550i (just the camera part) |

Ok so i went out and bought me a new shiny w550i. great phone. great mp3 player. nice style. look and all only problem is when i bought it i couldnt test the camera and i thought i was doing something wrong. in fact the guy told me the camera had about 8x or so zoom and i being the idiot iam believed him.
i put the camera in 1280x960 mode and when i try to zoom it says it cant zoom "in this mode". when i lower the resolution to 640x480 it only does up to 2x zoom and when i lower it to the lowest it can do about 4x.
it even states on the se site the zoom is 4x .. i assume this is for all modes whether its 1280x960 or lower.
is there software out there (being third party of course) that will help?
i hope i am doing something wrong or the firmware on this thing is old ???
help?

As the phone doesn't have an optical zoom, I shouldn't worry about what digital zoom you can use in any particular resolution.
To get the zoom, it simply scales up the image - so it quickly becomes as blocky as hell. You can do a better job yourself in Photoshop/Paint Shop Pro or whatever.
If you are happy with a smaller image, the higher resolution can theoretically compensate for the reduced resolution - but it's no different than cropping the largest image to 640x480 or 320x240 around the bit you want to 'zoom'.

I think the digital zoom used by these phones are not exactly zooming as in making the pixels larger. It only uses the available resolution of the phone's cam and showing only a portion of that large image in the size you are currently using -- in the case of the w550 it's 1280x960. This is the reason why zoom is not available for all resolutions.
So this results in: (if I'm not mistaken)
1280x960 no zoom
VGA (640x480) up to 2x zoom
QVGA (320x240) up to 4x zoom
160x120 (not sure if this is available) up to 8x
resistance is futile. |

it's not 160x120 size that is not available actually. it's availble.
the one that's not available is QVGA size.

when i went to play with the phone again i found that the highest resolution is now 1280x1024. i could have sworn it said 1280x960 at first. anyways. |

That should be the max resolution for a 1.3MP cam:
1280 x 1024 = 1310720
Maybe it doesn't use a 4:3 aspect ratio or maybe it doesn't use square pixels.

my gripe really is about how this phone is a sony ericsson with a 1.3megapixel cam but cant zoom when the nokia 6630 (effective resolution 1.23 megapixels for image capture (1280 x 960 pixel resolution) or 6680 with a 1.3 integrated 1.3 megapixel camera sensor (1.23 megapixel effective resolution, 1280 x 960 pixels) with 6x digital zoom and slide for camera protection, activation, and control
both of these can zoom very well!

why do you bother for the digital zoom...it doesn't matter at all as when the zoomed picture is put on a pc it's just the center part of the original picture |

@ pepi, exactly! digital zoom is crap, if one wants to zoom in on a pic - do so on the PC. zoom on camera phones is crap generally anyway, unless you have a sharp 902 or 903 or something that has optical zoom |

Is the w550i cam really that bad? Can you try posting a pic from an outside view in daylight. Thanks.
I also agree about the digital zoom comments. I never used it.
