Should I format my mem. stick. for w800 FAT16 or 32? |

As topic... today my mem stick got corrupted, so I had to format it... I used FAT32; previously I used FAT16. Now, I know the differences between these two file systems; I'm asking... is there any diff. in the phone wheter I choose one or another?
And also... when I format it through the phone... which format it gives?
Thanks

You should allways use format command in the phone to format the mem stick, if the memstick needs formatting, this way it will format in proper fattable and automatically create the proper default folderstructure. Do not format in external cardreader, and do not format the removable device through windows with phone attached to the usb cable. Use the command in the phone. This way you eliminate any possibility that you format with wrong fattable or cluster sizes, which could be a reason for the filecorruption happening.
It will get formatted in FAT - not FAT32

Yes... I know, but it also works in FAT32 so I was wondering... and I read somewhere a discussion like this, if using 16/32...
EDIT: For example, using sticks > 2 GB should be FAT 32...

Point is there are no DUO's above 2GB yet, and S//E do not in whitepapers mention support for DUO's above 2GB in K750/W800
Theoretically it should - but might need further firmwareupdating, so at this point in time its a moot debate.
Point is also, people are regularly posting experiences with different problems with their memstick, at the same time many experiment with the partitioning and formatting using all kinds of ways to do this, different partitionsizes, fattables and clustersizes, and simultaneously blame the phone when it doesnt work.
I cannot take peoples complaints seriously if they insist on experimenting with the way they partition and format their memsticks in these ways, and refuse to use the obvious method, because it makes it impossible to be sure if the problems are caused by the phone or by the way the users mishandle their memsticks.
Using the obvious way by formatting using the phones own formatting command, you not only ensure it gets formatted according to the way the phone and S//E expect it to be, you also entitle yourself the right to complain if it does not work properly.

I agree, prior to upgrading my firmware It all worked fine, however after upgrading I had problems with my mem stick recognising mp3 files using disc to phone and drag and drop via explorer. Files would go on but after taking usb out they would dissapear.
I tried formatting via windows and still experienced eratic behaviour when loading mp3 so i then formatted via the phone, and touch wood, no problems since.
Format via your phone mate, it seemed to do the trick for me

I formatted using the phone, FAT16, FAT32, whatever and it doesn't work. Plus; it drops the connection even using the memory reader.... I can't stand it anymore! I just bought the reader and now its doing this???

perhaps you should be looking for a replacement phone mate, upgrade or sim free, it must still be under warranty.

If it drops connection using your external cardreader, then theres something wrong with the usbimplementation on your computer.
You should troubleshoot this because a problematic usb implementation can also give you all sorts of problem when you connect the phone, such as failed firmwareupdating, failed filetransfers etc. - Unstable usb implementations are very common.
Look for things like updated drivers for the chipset used in your computer, perhaps try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers for your usb controller. If you use a usb hub or usb plate mounted in front of your computer make sure it has its own powersource. If its a 2-4 port plate in front of your computer it may be wired inside to just one of the usb ports on your motherboard and thus not able to deliver enough power if it is not also connected with a separat powercable. If so, make sure you only use one usb device at a time in this
And still use the format command on the phone to format the memorystick. Theres no need to experiment with other ways of formatting, cause this wont help.
If you use the format command on the phone, and have troubleshooted and fixed your usb implementation so that it works stable when using external cardreader to transfer files, then you know you have done what you can, and theres no need for further experimenting. The problem then lies in either the phone or the memorystick.
good luck

The USB works fine, I have two (one 5-ports PCI and motherboard on) and they both work great. What started to fail lately is the card reader...
