First it was GSM 900, then came GSM 1800, GSM 1900, GSM 850 and GSM 450. What next? Is it all for GSM?
It seems that UMTS will not replace GSM...

GSM Jumps Back to the 450 Frequency Band
Nokia and Ericsson have both returned to the GSM450 market, announcing plans to start selling infrastructure in the 450Mhz band, currently dominated by CDMA450. The GSM vendors had originally planned to deploy GSM services in the 450Mhz band as an upgrade path for existing analogue NMT-450 operators - but withdrew citing low demand. The CDMA vendors stepped in to the gap with deployments in several countries.
Moscow Cellular Communications had trialled a GSM450 network in Russia back in June 2000, but chose to deploy CDMA450 the following year. The lower fequency has the advantage that you can cover a larger area - although with lower capacity - and this makes it ideal for rural and emerging markets.
"Nokia believes that reducing the total cost of ownership for both affordable handsets and mobile voice services are the key when it comes to reaching the next billion consumers in new growth markets," says S?Petersen, Senior Vice President, Nokia Mobile Phones. "The GSM450 frequency can provide a way of giving consumers and operators a choice in taking full advantage of the affordability of GSM technology."
Ulf Ewaldsson, Vice President and head of GSM solutions at Ericsson, says: "We believe that GSM will be the leading access technology supporting mass-market services for a long time to come. GSM 450 is the next logical step in providing service to emerging growth markets."
To enhance capacity and coverage potential in the future, 450 can be combined with current frequency bands, even in the same geographical area. This means that the operator can combine the coverage characteristics of 450 MHz with high-capacity solutions provided by the current frequencies. All generally supported features in GSM will also be supported in the GSM 450 band. Infrastructure can be shared between all supported GSM bands.
Ericsson, together with major handset vendors, is driving the 450 solutions to enable product launch during 2006, depending on market demand.
