the original s60 needed third party apps to play mp3s. think the newer ones do it out the box |

Yup, you should install 3rd party application like Ultra MP3 Player or alike in order your Nokia S60 to play MP3, otherwise it only can play WAV.
NGage QD, 3650/3660, 6600 don't have built-in MP3 player...
