For you peeps having problems getting your grubby paws on a W800i - it would seem you're not the only one.

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Sony Ericsson has trouble meeting demand in Europe for some of its latest models, such as its first Walkman phone, due to popular demand, analysts said on Wednesday, but the firm denied there were logistical problems.

"Sony Ericsson's W800 Walkman phone and the K750 are seeing healthy demand in distribution and retail. They are in short supply at retail," said analyst Ben Wood at market research group Gartner, who tracks the global mobile handset industry.

Sony Ericsson's W800 phone is the first phone that uses Sony's revived Walkman brand, which was first launched in 1979 and went on to sell more than 340 million of the cassette players.

The K750 model features a 2 megapixel high-quality photo camera with autofocus.

Sony Ericsson said it could sell more of the 400 euro Walkman phones if it could supply them.

"We could probably sell tonnes more if we had them," a spokesman for the Japanese-Swedish firm said, declining to give details of shipments.

But he said there were no logistical issues or supply chain problems that squeezed supply. Sony Ericsson has had problems in the past of meeting demand due to logistical problems.

The 50:50 handset venture between Sony Corp <6758.T> and Ericsson has decided to produce all Walkman phones in its own factories, and not rely on contract manufacturers such as Flextronics which are used for other models.

Market research group Strategy Analytics estimates Sony Ericsson will sell 1 million Walkman phones in the 4.5 months between the launch and the end of the year, half of the estimated 2 million ROKR music phones made by Motorola , which can play songs from Apple's iTunes store.

But sources close to Sony Ericsson said internal plans are for much higher sales.

Sony Ericsson is the world's number five phone maker. It focuses on more expensive models and has a 6.2 percent share of the market of 780 million units a year.

The Japanese-Swedish joint venture was one of the first top five phone brands out of the gates with a dedicated music phone when its Walkman phone hit the shop shelves in mid-August. It is the first model in a range of Walkman phones that will eventually be able to download music from Internet music stores.

So grab them while you can peeps.

When I spoke to a guy at CPW shop a couple of weeks ago, he said that as soon as they get stock they are sold. They dont seem to have stock of them for very long.

Yeah... that's right.
In Jakarta, Indonesia, the price of K750i and W800i are increasing.
The price of K750i had once drop to Rp 3,400,000 but then rise step by step from Rp 3,600,000 to Rp 3,800,000 and today it is Rp 3,950,000.
The price of W800i from Rp 4,800,000 drop to Rp 4,600,000 then Rp 4,550,000 and now it is on Rp 4,750,000.
(1 USD = Rp 10,500)

In the other side, the price of other brands, including Nokia, is slowly drop and never rise back.

Cheers men...

When I got mine they had two in stock and were pretty much holding a raffle for the other one.

What got me, although I wasn't surprised is that they have them in stock but they are linked to a particular network. So, when I wanted one on Vodafone they didn't have one, same in Orange but they offered me one on O2. I hadn't really thought about that side of it. I thought they were all in the back and they took one out when they needed one, regardless of the network you were on ('cept for the branded handsets of Satan, of course).

Whenever the girl inthe shop left the desk for a moment to go to the printer etc, she was picking up the box and taking it with her, in case I had it away. Never come across that before

It seems then the price is going up and this handset is much in demand!

So Orange has put the price up then! Buggers!

No mention of them being in short supply online above. Is anyone having problems ordering one online?

This is what happens when you sell your own factories and relay the production to other companies like Flextronics...

You can't manufacture many phones in the factories you don't have...

It says above that they chose to manufacture the W800i in their own factories on this occasion!

Its outsourcing that increases the risk of logistical problems, I always thought.

I work in an o2 retail store and there is a serious probem in getting the w800i. If we are lucky every 2 weeks we get a delivery of around 8 of the phones whereas at times we've had nearly 60 k750i's being delivered (which dont last the week). In soo many ways i'm glad sony ericsson are doing well, all this short supply will probably get other people interested inm how good they are. But they are not prepared enough to cope with demand, we could have easily sold hundreds more of the w800i's for se

Yes u did. Ericsson sold out almost all its factories and fired thousands of people in sweden. Ericsson basicly don't have any factories left. And since they don't manufacture in the factories Ericsson sold to Flextronics this is what happens...
