Does the music cable (MMC-60) work as antenna ? |

Hi all,
just a quick question about the cable for my K750i: can it work as a radio antenna? Sounds logical in some way but better to be sure.

I expect so, since even a handsfree with the ear buds chopped off so there is only about 15cm of cord still gives reasonable reception (on a K700 handsfree with K700)
I would be surprised if it doesn't. However it'd be good to know for sure before u buy. The HPM70 certainly works, maybe you should get that for more flexibility. You can still plug into external stereo equipment - just get a mini-jack to rca adapter lead. |

Yes it does. Of course if you just have the cable attached and the cable isn't attached to anything, you'd have to transfer sound to speaker. But if you actually have the MMC-60 attached the speakers, then yes it does play the radio. |

For some reason, it doesn't work for me. I get the message "Please insert the handsfree. The cord works as the radio antenna".
so no, for me it doesn't. |

Yes it can work as an antenna but if the RCA plugs are not connected to any load then it will remain an open circuit. The phone needs a load (resistance) on these terminals for it to turn on the radio. Try connecting a resistor (30 ohms maybe) to close the circuit on one of the RCA plugs. I don't know if it is safe but I think short circuiting the RCAs will make the radio work too.

interesting. I cut the mike and ear buds off a standard non-stereo handsfree (K700 style), leaving about 10 cm's of lead, but un-closed (ie: not short circuited), and the radio worked.
I think radio playing also has something to do with handsfree profile (a short between certain pins in the plug tells the phone a handsfree is attached). I suspect if you shorted those two pins (whatever they are) direct on the phone's port itself the radio will work (although with no reception it will just play static.)
With the mmc-60 cable, it maybe doesn't activate handsfree profile unless either or both of the channels are plugged in to create the short that tells the phone a handsfree is attached. |

I did that too long back, with the normal wired headphones...
I worked even with a centimetre of the cable & the pin.
But with poor reception

hehe, me neither  Atleast not without more info.
Nevertheless, inside the K700 handsfree connector (I butchered one open) two pins are connected together (no resistor) to trigger the handsfree, so I suspect the same system used on the K750. |

Why not just use a continuity tester (or ohmeter) to check which pins are shorted on the headphones plug?

Good point. I also have an article from se-nse that gives the pinout - I just need to dig it up (hidden in "my documents" somewhere).

the radio works with the mmc-60 attached (I bought one today - just tested it out)
This things is brilliant, the sound quality is actualy better than using the HPM-70 with 3.5mm to rca adapter. I am quite impressed. Only $23 too.

there is no question that the hpm70 works with the radio, everyone knows this. What is being asked is does the radio work with the mmc-60, which doesn't activate the handsfree profile.
I only mentioned the hpm70 with regard to sound quality - the mmc-60 is way better.
