T610 function button failiure - could it be a software problem? |

I currently have a T610 that's awaiting a new screen. However, the function buttons (that is, the two softkeys next to the screen, the 'c' button and the 'back up' button) aren't working. All other buttons and the joystick appear to be working fine.
I've just bought (perhaps a little rashly!) another T610 off Ebay with an apparently identical problem - could this be a software problem rather than a hardware one?
The number keys work still on the broken screen T610 (I won't recieve the other one till probably Tuesday), and I suspect it's not a keypad problem as it affects a certain few keys in the same area of the phone, and it doesn't look like an isolated incident as it's happened to two phones, and I've seen one or two more in Ebay with the same fault being described.
Anyone had experience of this problem? Will a software flash sort the problem?

Don't know if this helps but my T610 had buttons which stopped working and this was because the button tops had come away from the plastic tray. Can the buttons be depressed?

Yes the buttons can be depressed, and it feels and sounds like they are working correctly, as if there was nothing wrong. This is why I'm wondering if it's a firmware issue, rather than with the button membranes.
It's strange as well that it's only the function buttons and not any of the numerical buttons, and that it's happening on two different phones as well as more that are on Ebay
