I am going to be traveling to NY and I am looking to buy some prepaid time. Any recomendations:
1) which carrier has the best coverage in the city and also Long Island
2) which if any carrier sells pay-as-you-go chips
3) a good place top purchase it.

Thanks to everyone who replied to this message LOL
I ended up going to NY and purchased a Cingular SIM card from them.
It was a pay per use plan that ended up costing me approximetly .35/min (80 minutes for $30), the SIM card was free. I call forwarded my regular number to my NY number. This worked well.
TO my surprise though Rogers/AT&T worked in NY.
I had good reception with both Cingular and AT&T.
