Hi.
I was wondering if any of you had the time to write an explanation or point me to somewhere about these technologies... as I got a new W800 a couple of days ago and I'm quite confused with them. Here are some "guidelines" that come across my mind:
1) WAP is accessed through GPRS?
2) What's the difference between WAP - GPRS?
3) Is WAP like HTML to a standard internet connection?
4) HTML in the cell... uses GPRS to get the data?
5) MMS... are sent / received via GPRS? They store themselves in kinds of 'mails boxes' for MMS?
Thanks in advance!! |

Yes.
But it is not only limited to GPRS. GPRS is only a medium for mobile phones to access content designed for them.WAP sites can also be accesed from a standard-non gprs internet connection using a wap emulator or the opera browser which can display wap pages on a pc. In the same way, wapsites can also be accessed through CSD or dial up wap.

There is indeed a major difference between the two>
Think of it this way:
GPRS is the highway while wap is the vehicle that uses the highway.
WAP pages are programmed in WML (Wireless Markup Language) which is a language in which content for mobile devices and handhelds are written. Like html for normal websites. WAP (Wireless Application Protocol)is the protocol used to display your WML pages in your phone browser (it's an application communication protocol used to access services and information on handheld/mobiles), wherereas GPRS is the protocol used to transfer the information on the network.

WAP is like HTTP: WML is like HTML: GPRS is llke Adsl or a medium of connection...hope you get this analogy!

Most Modern mobile phones (not all!) are capable of displaying html pages designed for pcs quite comfortably these days. For the cell phone to acces the internet, you need some sort of connection...GPRS is currently the most popular way of accessing the internet from your phone.

Yep. MMS requires a gprs connection. But usually, a different profile is alloted for mms only.
