OK, I now have the software: Route 66.
Has anyone bought a seperate Bluetooth GPS Receiver?
I'm looking at:

I got the Globalsat BT338. Excellent little unit. The early versions had a fault whereby it wouldn't lock on after travelling a large distance turned off, though the latest version has corrected this.
In general the SirfStar III chipset is pretty superior in terms of gaining locks on satellites and holding them.

So am i right in thinkning that all i need is a GPS suite such as Tom Tom Mobile 5, etc. and then an additional GPS receiver - asuming that I did not acquire the 2 as a bundle?

All you need is the routing software and a bluetooth gps receiver
Some companies like TomTom only sell the official authorised software packaged with their own GPS receiver - no official software only version is available (a lot of those software only versions on Ebay are most probably rip-offs).
Some like Route66 can either sell you the whole package, or just sell the software only version and allow you to buy your own GPS receiver. |

Well ive just ordered a BT338 SIRF Star III BT Receiver from expansys.co.uk for £100. Lets hope it does what I want!
Just to recap, I have Route 66 software.
I'll let you know how it goes. I ordered it tonight (Tue). I'm off to Edinbirgh on Friday afternoon & am hoping it will (prob not) turn up by then as I'm travelling from Kent  . A good 6/7hr drive me thinks!

The only problem I have found with the BT338 is that the rubber cap covering the charge point breaks off.
My biggest worry is that it's too easy to forget about it and leave it either on the dashboard or in a pockethole in full view when you leave the car - nice little theft target for some scrote.

Apparently, it can be used in your glovebox or somewhere else - is this thru - ie, can the bluetooth work normal distances apart?

I find with mine that I have to achieve intial lock (at home by window or in car on dashboard), then I can put it in an open cubbyhole down by the gearstick and it maintains lock. I've not tried it in the glovebox.
Trying to lock on initially in the cubbyhole takes longer and sometimes fails.
It can get pretty hot on the dashboard on a sunny day so I prefer it out of the sun anyway.
You can get PC software called SirfDemo and link in to the GPS receiver if you have a bluetooth adapter. You can then see which satellites the GPS can pick up, and which lock on.
Quite interesting to see how it performs as you move further away from windows - the GPS tends to lose locks when you cover it with your hand, in buildings which have lots of aircon stuff in the roof, or as you move deeper into your house.

Ok, I'm eagerly awaiting my GPS receiver still (its delayed as something else I ordered isn't in stock )
I have a new question - is there any "free" software or patch/update that will warn me about speed cameras on my journey (route 66)?

it's updated regularly, unfortunately i dont think it works with Route66, they have instructions on the site which tell you how to install for different applications so i may be wrong.
im using TomTom software which is very good but i havent tried anything else so am a little biased on other satnav products.
as mentioned above the BT338 is a very good bluetooth receiver, they all usually take a couple of minutes to pick up satellites when turned on so dont get worried by the slow start....i have the original tomtom recevier and find the BT338 better than that in both performance and battery power.

For some reason Route 66 just don't want to know about speed cameras...can't be that difficult to incorporate a little routine to download a database and display it? |

WOW!!!! I got my GPS receiver today! ITS BRILLIANT.
Using Route 66 and BT-338.
Anyone thinking about a cheaper (good as) alternative to a all-in-one SatNav SHOULD get this instead!
I'm VERY pleased. Thank you to all who helped me decide, especially CookUK.

ARe there any ROute 66 products for Canada/US for the P910i?
Also, has anyone experienced that at a roundabout with 2 exits, when going right (2nd exit) it says to go left? when really it shows to go right?

Routee66 website support/free updates has a small update that sorts out some roundabout directions.
Q. The ROUTE 66 Mobile 2006 Sony Ericsson on-screen instructions sometimes differ from the voice instructions at roundabouts in Britain on my Sony Ericsson P800 / P900 / P910 / P910i.
A. Download and install the update. Consult the section "Installing applications" in your Sony Ericsson User Manual for instructions on how to install a ".SIS" file on your mobile phone.
