Hamster-powered phone charger
Forgot your charger? Too far to the nearest socket? If you've got a hamster; Fear no more.
Let this little chap charge your mobile phone...
A 16-year-old boy invented a hamster-powered mobile phone charger as part of his GCSE science project.
Peter Ash, of Lawford, Somerset, attached a generator to his hamster's exercise wheel and connected it to his phone charger.
Elvis does the legwork while Peter charges his phone in an economically and environmentally friendly way.
He came up with the idea after his sister Sarah complained that Elvis was keeping her awake at night by playing for hours on his exercise wheel.
"I thought the wheel could be made to do something useful so I connected a system of gears and a turbine," he said.
"Every two minutes Elvis spends on his wheel gives me about thirty minutes talk time on my phone."
The teenage inventor was given a C for his project and has been awarded a D overall for the course.

I wonder if he has been contacted by any phone manufacturers...?

I think that would be classed as animal cruelty, but lets give it a go anyway

Thats bloody funny!
Forget your Tamagotchi java apps - this is like the ultimate mobile accessory - you just need to feed it, and clean up after it - and it will power your mobile.

I don't fancy carrying it around in one pocket and a head of lettuce in the other though.
Now about that wide area powering hampster..

Apparently, somebody had a similar idea before.
And now they're also saying that he fudged the numbers. charging your phone for two minutes gives you 30 minutes talktime???

I completly diagree with you, its so incredibly simple, even someone in year 9 knows that if you turn a motor backwards it genrates a current. Thats basically all he's done. it wouldnt even surprise me if he's just dismatled one of the hand winder chargers and stuck it on the hampster cage.
If I were marking it I would have given it alot less then a C |

And overall score of a "D" that's not so good... anyway, now you not only have to carry your charger around, but also the hamster and the cage. |
