Age old Sx1s sound quality>P910i? |

Yes, the statement in the subject of this topic is right. My (beautiful black ed) SX1s MP3 (bitrate 160kbps n above) sound quality is better (actually way better) than the P910s.
(note : each set using the default mp3 players n the default stereo headsets ofcourse).
Isnt this strange?? I mean, ppl rave n rant about the P910's sound quality, n i find it way below my taste. So, what could be wrong? I used my friend's (p910a) headset on mine just to confirm, n the music sounds equally not-so-good as it did b4. Is it my old (and never updated) FIRMWARE that is the culprit?? Have u any ideas and/or experiences simliar to mine? Plz share here.........

Hum... Some ideas...
The P910 player is software based, without DSPs to improve or equalize the sound (afaik).
The quality - or better - the fidelity of the output sound is related to the quality of the MP3s and the MP3 decoder.
Maybe the MP3 decoder of the P910 is not that good?
Suggestion: Try Unreal Player! Ogg Vorbis files sound way better than any other player I've tried.
Finally, I remind you that what "sounds better" is a subjective evaluation. You may find that the sound with the most fidelity is frequently the one that sounds worst! Example: If you are used to amplify the treble and bass, you will feel the lack of them when you hear the music the way it was recorded. |

@ lau
thx for the reply.
On topice: the mp3s i listen are mostly 320kbps ones ripped straight from the CDs, thats why i am dissapointed with the sound quality that P910 delivers.
And, is Unreal Player really good?? I have seen ppl recommend Power MP3, which is better and why??

About the 320 bps...
Maybe it's just that, the 156 mhz of the Pxxx can not handle that bps gracefully. Or maybe it's the codec that's lame.
A long time ago when I had an old PC, I remember that WinAmp could not handle high bps, due to lack of processor speed. |

@ Lau
thx for the reply man, but if a Siemens SX1 running on a processor @ 125mhz can handle it, why cant the p910?? strange that |

Maybe because it has a hardware decoder (dedicated chip), like all standalone MP3 players have today.

So, the firmware has nothing to do with the sound quality then? |

Firmware is the OS plus default applications.
I don't know what Se has been fixing, but I doubt they changed anything in the MP3 decoder since release.
I wouldn't be surprised if you find out they used the LAME MP3 encoder/decoder. |
