Transfer speed for K750/W800 |

Hi there.
I'm thinking about buying either the K750 or W800. But I've been wondering about how fast you can transfer files between your phone and the computer via cable or bluetooth. If it's anything like my old phone it would take decades and then I'd probably rather buy a separate camera and mp3-player.
So, if you've a 512MB memory card filled with photos and want to transfer them to your computer. Or if you want to empty the card of mp3's and fill it with new songs, does anyone know how long time that would take?
Also, I'd like some oppinions on the camera. Is it really good enough to use as a regular digital camera? I used to have a Minolta X20 2Mpix camera and it took pictures that were good enough for my purposes, would one of these phones do well as a replacement?
Many thanks to those who can find the time to answer.
Cheers! |

Transfers through the supplied cable to the memorycard when inserted in the phone is normal USB speed which is plenty fast for normal transfers of several megabytes. 10mb is transfered in about 30sec.
Transfers to the internal memory are much much slower because it use a seriel emulation. Fastest is to first transfer to memorycard then transfer from memorycard to the phone directly on the phone.
To speed up transfers to/from the memorycard further, detach it from the phone and place it in a normal USB2 Highspeed reader/writer, and it will be very very fast.
The camera of K750/W800 is quite good, the best 2mp mobilecam available, and quite comparable with normal 2mp digicams in quality.
Better in some respect, worse in others.
Check out the K750 pictures thread for examples.

I get faster transfers than that, it's like an external hard (high speed),
it's nothing like the bluetooth so don't worry , you can easily copy a gig in a few minutes.

I've been doing some tests with the K750i.
K750i both reads and writes at around 320KB/s (2.5Mbps), tested with the bundled Sony 64MB card and a Sandisk 512MB PRO Duo.
This means as numb said, a 10MB file takes around 30 seconds to transfer.
Now, lets say you want to transfer 450MB of MP3's. That would take around 25 minutes. And if you'd want to empty the card to your computer first it would take around 50 minutes total. |

So basically if you're going to use the phone as an mp3/video player or to take lots of photos, a separate card reader is almost essential..
Personally I'm very disappointed with the speed of transferring files onto the phone itself. I don't expect it to be lightning fast, but it just seems silly that they specifically changed the interface (i.e. new connector) for higher speeds, but it's still faster to send files to/from the phone via bluetooth =/ |

I have been testing also and its about 10MB file takes around 30 seconds as well. But isn't this very slow? I mean comparing to an Ipod, the speed is is about 4 seconds for 10MB.
More importantly, below is a link to some of the basic spec. of memory stick PRO (which is the same as duo except for its size)
http://www.memorystick.com/en/ms/features5.html
Scroll down and you will notice that it claims a MINIMUM write speed of 15 Mbps = 2MBps. 1 song is maybe about 5 MB. Which means that if optimized, the we should be seeing a speed of at least 2 sec per 5MB song which translates to maybe 20 seconds per cd or per album.
Does anyone know why is the speed of transfer to the memory stick duo PRO limited in the case of k750/ w800? |

I don't see what the fuss is about with just getting a card reader. They're so cheap nowadays anyway. |

A usb card reader is the best option. I got mine from tesco for 10 pounds. Its plug and play so you can use it in almost any pc.

Yeah, the speed is a bit low. But the minimum requirement is for the card, not the device. |

exactly, the limiting factor is not the memorystick, but the speed of the fastport interface.
I dont find it to be a problem, its plenty fast for everyday use. 20mb in a minut is not problem. Thats atleast 40 pictures, and I usually dont take more than 40 pictures pr. day.
After all its not everyday you need to transfer 512-1024 mb to/from the memorycard. If so I dont find using a cardreader to be a problem.
I find the serial speed of the internal memory more annoying, but not really much either. I only use the internal memory to store things that dont need to be moved back and forth all the time. Themes, ringtones, games etc. Everything else I keep on my 512mb memorycard, and the camera is set to store pictures on the memorycard also.

Well it depends. I have a w800 with a 1GB MSDP and I use it like a music player .. so i transfer and mix around the songs abit in and out of the MSDP quite regularly.
Removing the MSDP and using the card reader daily can be quite annoying.. |

true, but you propably dont move 1gb each day do you ?
Its not feasable that people should have the time to listen to 1gb of mp3's and need to renew 1gb of mp3 each and every single day ?
I dont beleive that
I also dont think people normally need to move mp3's from their phone to the computer before putting new mp3's on it, normally they are allready on the pc, thats where they came from to start with. Organising and deleting files allready on the phone are not limited by the transferspeed. So basically most of the time we are only talking transfers from the pc to the phone.
even when used for music its most likely not much more than 100mb each day on an average that gets moved to the phone, often in pieces, and thats max 5min total
I still dont see the big problem, I move alot of 6-8 mb musicvideos to the phone regularly, and never feel its a problem, takes a few seconds each, so what ? Even moving 100-200mb is no problem, I start the transfer and go take a leak, or put the coffeekettle on, and when I get back in 5-10 minuttes its done.
Whats the rush ?

Its not so much of being in a rush. It is a simple comparison of customer experience for someone like me who owns both an ipod and a w800.
With itunes and ipod, I am able to synch itunes amd ipod music automicatically, the the option of shuffle to manage the music content in my player easily.
However, w800 presently does NOT have an excellent software that manages this well. So I rely on hopefully as fast or nearly as fast a transfer speed as an ipod to manage my music files by windows copy and paste. And yes, I do play around with chunks of music every 2 days (I have many music albums and I have a 5GB 1st Gen Ipod)... and I also subscribe to Podcasts which have new episodes each day.
Do not get me wrong. It is still the best 2G phone I would recommend available now. And I think SE is taking the right step to recapture the digital music market. BUT as a walkman to compete directly/ indirectly to an ipod shuffle, it falls somewhat short in this area (speed of file transfer, music synching, shuffle capability)
{Btw, I bought the phone NOT as a substitute to the ipod, but I genuinely like its overall package and it will be even better if it can act as a backup to my main player when it is troublesome to carry both around}
Also I was questioning the technical part of its speed limitations. Because in terms of hardware, both USB 2.0 hi speed and memory stick duo pro will definitely provide a really high speed of data transfer (5MB/2 sec achievable). I am simple asking if anyone knows what this limitation is due to... firmware, memory etc? |

Ok, the w800i is marketed as a walkman? Therefore it's moving into iPod/iPod shuffle marketing areas, so comparing them is valid.
Its clear the w800 as some limitations as a music device. Limitations it shouldn't have to be honest. The FastPort was redesigned in the k750 to increase the speed vs the older type.
iPod shuffle -> great software support on the PC/Mac with iTunes (including autofill).
iPod shuffle -> high speed transfer rate (~1 song/sec)
Waiting 6 minutes to transfer an album of mp3s to the phone, vs 12 secs on the iPod is a BIG difference. That's pretty damn poor!
