i was speaking to a guy on msn one night and he told me he had swapped his t68i buzzer and put in a nokia polyphonic speaker giving a polyphonic t68i , i think this is not possible because the t68i does not have the software to incorporate this am i right? or is what he said he did possible?

quite right...
but picture this...
you have a 5.1 speaker system but you don't have a software that converts the original 2-channel sound into 5-channel sound...
so this pretty much means you are getting stereo sound on surround speakers!

for polyphonic ringtone enable in phone, both hardware and software must support.

yes, but if the hardware has built in s/w, then you don't need additional s/w from your phone. It also depends how many sterio bits he is getting from his so called polyphonic tone.
