“I meant things such as certain apps not going back to a default setting - eg when you view an sms and exit the app without going back to the main sms screen, the next time you go into sms you are back at the last message you looked at! “

That“s actually a feature, not a bug... Apple“s apps “save and quit“ instead of just quitting. It“s the iphone“s interface, it 'behaves' like all apps are running at the same time without having to sacrifice memory or battery.

tell me if I'm being silly - but, say for example I have just read an SMS and then I exit. Then a few minutes later I want to send an sms to someone else, I go back into SMS. At this point I would want the SMS App to be at the main screen where I can just select New SMS (or select another SMS). I don't really want to be faced with the SMS I read a few minutes earlier and to then have to back track to the main screen.

I know it's only a matter of a few (max) touches of the screen, but it makes no sense.

Same with email, safari, phone...

I like the iphone, dont get me wrong, but its just little things which make it a bit of a PITA

So with regard to the upcoming 2.2 firmware does anyone know what this is likely to bring? All I've heard so far is things like street view to the maps etc. Nothing that's going to particularly improve on the actual user interface of things like the sms etc.

I'd really like an iphone myself. Lots of my friends have one and I have the 32GB Touch myself so know all about its 'non phone' features. But it's the phone features, or lack of, that have stopped me from making the plunge so far.

The sms app lacks basic features and I just don't get why.

Forwarding a text message, how hard can that be to add?

Delivery reports. I always have these on and they come in very handy for me a lot of the time. A simple feature on any phone and one that I'd miss.

And as much as I like the way the sms app keeps a conversation thread between two people it drives me mad that you can't delete individual messages from the thread. You have to either delete the entire thread or nothing at all. Crazy. You could end up with loads of meaningless messages from someone such as 'hi, how are you' or 'see you later' but amongst that might be some you want to keep. Again how hard can it be to add this? It's the little things!!

Landscape text entry for sms and email.

Copy & paste... zzzzzz

The ability to create groups in contacts and then be able to sms or email that group instead of having to go and add every recipient individually from contacts. A basic feature that should be there.

mms. I know a lot of people aren't too bothered but it's still something that a lot of people use and would miss, me included, and should be on there.

Everything I've mentioned there is surely a very simple software fix, they're pretty much all things that a lot of people would like to see added so why the hell don't they?! I just don't understand how after several software revisions Apple still haven't bothered to address any of these simple issues yet will release new firmware with something like street view.

Until the iphone becomes as good as doing the basic phone tasks that pretty much any phone can do let alone a smartphone then I can't see me making the plunge. No matter how good the rest of it is. And that winds me up... because I want one!!!

I can see what you're saying, but on the other hand say you we're typing an sms or an email and you got a phone call and when you went back to it, it was on the main screen and you lost the text/email? How annoying would that be?

Or if you're typing a message out, and you needed to check something out on safari before sending the message so you have to exit out. And when you go back in to SMS it's lost your message. How irritating would that be?

I find that it's very useful. Normally if i'm looking at mail, i always tap to go back to the inbox before i exit, it's kinda become automatic. If not it's no biggie to just go back, it's not like the interface is sluggish or non-responsive

almost true there dude.

But, most phones give you the option to Save to Draft if you exit midway through an SMS or email.

Or, like with WM, you can just click to check programmes running in the background and click on it to bring it back. But I know Apple would never incorp this

But to change this to another App; Safari. Now there's something that really should have at least a Home Screen! Yes?

Or, even more relevant, the Phone App should at least default back to the dialer screen! Yes?

Just the minor things guys. Just the minor things Still loving the phone though

@Scooby, it's very unlikely that 2.2 is going to address anything other than 'bug fixes' and add a stupid little google box in safari and crappy 'street view' in maps. Why they persist on working on silly little things like this rather than improving the things that they missed out on, even in the first iPhone, is beyond me.

I mean, if jailbroken apps like biteSMS can delete/forward SMS', landscape mode etc then it's possible and surely easy to implement in to the standard SMS app. They should look at the jailbreak apps in a positive manner, rather than a stubborn negative manner.

Copy and paste will probably never be available on this iphone, they seemed to have created this stripped down version of OSX with major flaws and limitations like the inability to have things running in the background. Again, this is something that the jailbreak has exploited and shown that it is possible, yet Apple seem to ignore this and carry on as usual. I truly believe that in the next couple of years, they'll release an iPhone with one of the selling points being copy and paste

And now that I've put this post up, guess what just happened a few minutes ago? I received 2 emails - whilst the phone was in sleep mode!!!

iPhone, you sure are a strange and temperamental beast!!!!

Role on 2.2 Though no doubt this will come with its own quirks though!!!

LOL! LOL! LOL!

And guess what now!!!

Yup. No longer Fetching emails again!

I give up. Will just wait for Apple to fix Push. In the mean time I'll just wake the phone every hour instead!!

@Scoobyd

If you already have a iPod Touch then don't go anywhere near an iPhone. There is so much useful stuff missing that its only the big screen and multi-touch UI that keeps me interested. If you have a Mac you may gain some extra benefit from syncing the two but not that much more than you already get from the Touch.

@all

I have Location Services setting to on but stil no option to Geo-tag. Help?

I think it“s a matter of personal taste. Imo the phone app should default back to favorites instead of the dialer which I never use. I don“t miss a home screen on safari because it“s suppose to remember the last pages i“ve visited and I like that.
But I see your point. The problem with Apple is not its interface or design choices, they are usually very good and user-friendly, even the background tasks (which DOES exist but are automatic) thing can be very convenient to the battery/memory and also ease of use. The problem is there“s NO choice. You have to cope with what apple puts in front of you. It would be great to change how apps behave or to able to turn background tasks to “manual“ instead of “automatic“ sometimes.
Apple should also improve the basic apps to please its existing customers instead of coming up with “new“ stuff all the time to attrack buyers. That“s why fw 2.2 will have “street view“ and no landscape typing through out the system or a better sms client. That way apple can say the iphone is “cool“ because it has street view just like the google phone. Bullshit. Who really wants street view?? I wanna be able to delete an individual call log instead of having to delete everything, is that too much to ask? Sometimes the iphone gets on my nerves and I start seeing nokia“s phones with bright eyes but then... they don“t have multitouch.. the screen is smaller, no ipod, no itunes... Damn!!

@SloopJohnB - Yup. I forgot to mention that an option from Apple to allow users to mod certain aspects of usability would have been good - ie let us choose about default settings etc

@ Ryan - good news. But something tells me it won't be long before Apple manage to override this.

@ All - has anyone had any experience with the Switcheasy Capsule Neo
http://www.ilounge.com/index.[....]easy-capsuleneo-for-iphone-3g/

It looks the mutts nutts, but just wanted to know if it makes the phone a lot bulkier or damages the original casing in anyway.

I was going to order the incase slider untill I saw this case.

Was looking at the neo, but I thought the number of pieces involved would put a bit too much bulk, that's just a guess tho, I haven't actually seen one in person.
So I just went for the slider

That Neo looks like a nice complete piece of kit for the money, including two screen protectors is a nice touch. Definitely getting more for your money there than the likes of the Contour flick i have atm... just a piece of plastic for £20!

The black one looks quite nice, but not so sure on the rubbery/silicone piece. I would still be tempted to go for the Incase over this as it just looks nicer

Nokia, could you do me a favour if poss...

Any chance you could put up some pics of your incase slider?

Does it make the phone feel a lot bulkier? I've read a few comments. Some say "yes" and some say "no". Obviously down to personal taste, but would be cool to see your phone in the case and here your view
