I have recently bought this strange Ericsson PDA-phone prototype from an collector.

As far as I have found out, It passed through the hands of a british and a german collector and was not working (which was the reason it was sold).

I found out it has had water damage. After some really heart-stopping disassembly and soldering work and battery replacement, I got the phone running again.

I was surprised that it was fully operational again.

To cut a long story short - does anyone know anything about this device?

It is called "Prototype Diana" Model A6101S, 01W22, on the back side label, but the internals say, it is a SC82 Symbian OS Phone, Codename "BRUTUS".

I have never seen any model like this and I would guess it could be the only existing model left - perhaps
because it has had water damage and was thrown away early during development, but as I said before, I am
not sure; I haven seen this model before and the other former owners have had got no infos either.

ps. I guess the developers at Ericsson were not quite enthusiastic about implementing Symbian and therefore calling their Machine "Brutus" *lol*

The software itself looks like and "feels" like P800. P800 itself, as we all know, was relaesed 6 months after Brutus (and SE-Merger). Interestingly, Brutus has got MMC/SD Card Slot, while SE P800 clearly got Memorystick-Slot. I guess Brutus came between R380 and P800 therefore.

Wow this really is one of the rarest prototypes I've seen here. Indeed it's Symbian UIQ.

I guess you got it as a bargain. What are its features?

Hi,
It was very very expensive, unfortunately - And I paid half of the price with 3 brand new in box ///-phones,
but to be honest, if the phone had been working, the german collector would never have sold it to me first place.

My hand was shaking so much during soldering works since none of the parts could be replaced anymore if I have had made some mistakes...

- Codename: Diana
- Machine Name: Brutus SC82
- 3,5" (9cm Touchscreen with stylus) 240×320, 256 colour, Supplier: Sharp
- GSM Triband & GPRS
- Mediaplayer
- Epoc Quartz 6.0 OS
- Bluetooth (but without function in the prototype)
- SD/MMC Card Slot
- 32 MB Flash (16/16)
- Wap 1.2 & HTML Browser
- Voice Calling
- BHC-11 Battery, 1400 mAh

After some search I found out how this Phone could have looked like as final product, it differs
a little bit from the prototype (no ericsson plug anymore) and the leds/buttons/speaker grill are slightly "adjusted" for smoother design, but still on the same spot as they are at Diana.

Also the 3G secondary antenna which can been seen on the final product is not available on the Diana prototype (3G is not implemented at all). The 2G+3G device was called "Pamela" , perhaps Pamela and Diana could have been two separate products for different markets, perhaps Diana was only test platform for Pamela; hard to tell.

You can get more infos about Pamela here:

http://my.opera.com/asrialbak[....]munictor-uiq-in-the-early-days
http://www.i-symbian.com/wp-c[....]/2009/11/Symbian_Evolution.pdf

The article also confirms what I have expected; Diana and Pamela were chancelled in favour of Epoc 7.0 OS Phone P800. perhaps, after all other big mobile phone companys chancelled their PDA line as well Ericsson dropped theirs too.

I don't know how ericssons policy of naming their phones was, I can only guess that SC82 could stand for "Symbian Concept" 82. Perhaps Pamela would have been SC83 then.. who nows...

January 01 of the year 2009 is page 640
January 01 of the year 2010 is page 647

Is there nothing to say anymore about old Ericsson phones? Have collectors become rare?

Well its hard to find good old Ericsson these days, even harder to find working prototypes.
The economy crisis has also had its impact on the collectors, many of us don't have much to left to spend on this exclusive hobby.
With Ericsson and Nokia gone: we must keep their spirits alive and buy JOLLA or YOTA

Well, probably it's not only the question of economic crisis. Some of "us" might just found new hobbies or got tired of collecting, like r0sewhite did. As years go by since ericsson stopped producing cell phones, the number of ericsson collectors unfortunately will decrease. Some of the fellow collectors will have interest in other brands as well, as those can provide not only more but probably also more interesting devices. It's a shame that as far as we're concerned, we won't be able to see new ericsson phones, but that's the way it is. Meanwhile, let's just thank to members like bloodyamon to show off their treasures, that otherwise would probably be unseen for the rest of us.

Hi guys,

I just put some units on ebay today. It's just the rest of what I sold a while ago when I reduced my collection to the most impressive prototypes and limited editions. This is a direct link to my offers: http://shop.ebay.de/r0sewhite/m.html. Tomorrow there will be some more auctions.

After more research I think Diana Production Model should have looked like the phone featured in Lara-Croft Tombraider Movie and pendant model Penelope (3G/umts) would have been an independent model after all.

As shown at pic below, Diana Prototype is identical to the phone from the movie, apart from the different keypad style and the two lower buttons and the antenna in correct fitting color.

@bloodyamon: Great phone! Would be nice for my collection too! Congrats! Does it work properly, do you use it?

@all:

Within some days I will add a new DT570 to my collection, I always liked it, because it is so near to the R320s, a very nice design, but hard to find on the net. Here is a little preview. Of cours there will be more photos here when the phone arrives

@Zsolthy: congrats! The R290 satellite is a special thing and if you can make it work properly it's really cool!

My new DT570 arrived exactly on December 24 2010, it is like new, I like it very much because it is so similar to the R320s!

Sigh, I miss designs.

I used to have a GF788, GH688, T28s, T68i, R320, R310s, R520.

I still have my T28s and R310s but no longer working.
