@etaab,

Not to start a flaming war, but as I've mentioned earlier, I find PPC apps more "bloated" than "sophisticated" and this means sucking more battery life out of the phone which in turns does not last even a single day. CAD app is perhaps being catered for a smaller market needs, but a CAD app available for PPC platform does not make PPC more professional over any other platforms. A PDA app more sophisticated than Desktop version? Oh, please tell Microsoft Windows team, graphics card like ATI and Nvidia and CAD/CAM developers about your findings so that Microsoft can drop Windows Vista, ATI, Nvidia can stop making FireGLs, etc and CAD/CAM developers can drop making any more desktop applications cos all they needed is a roughly 2MB PPC software, running on Windows Mobile 2003 with perhaps an ATI Imageon graphics chip to do all their engineering works

So what apps for "professional standards" are you requesting P990i to have?

I wouldnt say its a flame war adnhk1, its more turning into a discussion about Symbian vs Windows rather than focusing on the P990i. One ive had on many forums many times over the years.

When i speak of sophistication, im not referring to the extra hardware power that a PPC has over a slower P series phone. Im speaking about the actual capabilities of the operating system itself. From a developers standpoint, Windows, Palm and Linux are all more sophisticated than Symbian. They all offer better support for developers, more open programming environments, better socket support and access to more APIs. Symbian isnt aimed at being a replacement for Windows PPC or Palm, but it is meant as a convergence operating system into standard phones to make them available to the masses.

Its not that Symbian could not have the same types of apps developed for it, they simply would not be as feature-rich.

In regards to your comments about my CAD package, the one i used on my pc was a rather basic one, it was not an expensive program and had rather basic features. Im sure if i spent £2,000 on a professional suite it would be many times more advanced than the CE version i used on my PPC - theres no need to mock what i said. I also used the fact i needed a CAD program on my PPC to illustrate the shortcomings of Symbian - at the time (and probably still true to this day) there are little or no CAD programs available for Symbian devices. At the time, i could only find one, and it was a simple viewer that offered no editable functions.

I think I got it. It is more of a developer support issue than OS sophistication. The problem with Symbian is that they are the market leader in the mobile phone segment, hence they seem to be doing things as they wishes. Yes, I do agree that both Symbian and UIQ are not giving as many hidden and non-hidden APIs out openly as developers had wished. I can recall a very simple API which SE and UIQ were ignoring all developers, i.e., the simple Flip Open Keylock API. Hence, no developers till date can tap on this API to work out some solid screenlock utilities, such as when the screen is locked, the background light cannot be permanently killed.

Cheers

@ adnhk1 - i think you could define an OS as more or less sophisticated in relation to how much it offers developers.

@ peepboon - why on earth would you want it on 3 ? its a relatively poor network. Im sure all the major networks will get the phone, but id guess Vodafraud will be the first, since they have a good friendship with SE at this point in time and have signed exclusivity deals with quite a few handsets, most recently the W900i.

Why would you when you can use html likes that are 'clickable' to stream over WiFI? But I'll bet if you could code well the data medium shouldnt be the problem. Its how your linking to the content.

My main concern is can I NOW click on a web link to stream or download into cache memory for WMV video or QuickTime video files to view. I'm really getting pissed off about doing ftsp:// links which just dont have the content that most of us are looking for. From what I said above ... previously with ANY Symbian OS phone it was a limitation based on REAL Networks standard (UIQ or S60).

I'll be shortly working with my friends for streaming LOTS of content that eventually I want to partner with my upcoming provider!

SO what say you?

Just spoken to Voda Uk. I'm going to wait for the P990i but told them I was not happy with the delay due to being out of contract now. They have offered me half price line rental for 6 months to stay while the phone comes out and then preferential rate for the phone.
