Too bad I haven't seen everything from SE with Tv-Out, at least prototypes. That's the future man: plug your phone to the tft of your car and play on.

TV out would be a nice feature to have like the Samsung D600 model.
Don't think this will be implemented on the P990i unless we want to wait another 12 months!

I could be wrong, but doesnt the P990i support streaming presentations etc via either Wi-Fi or Bluetooth ? whats the difference ?

I cannot be bothered to look through endless amounts of P990i webpages to see if its true or not..

I believe that's correct. Certainly wifi has enough bandwidth to support streaming, so all that's needed is a wifi receiver that can output via composite video. I'm sure I've heard of such a thing. I'd be surprised if you couldn't get a wifi video streaming receiver.

Does this mean we can say goodbye to in-car DVD players? cos some people no longer play cd's in their cars anymore, just hook up your phone to the stereo and play on.

This would have to be a customized WiFi receiver that works with a customized software on the audio/video source. There are no "general" WiFi receivers with audio/video outputs that work with any streaming devices. The input source usually needs to have a server/software that can push data to this receiver. The server is driven by a software that is usually tailored communicate with a specific receiver. Thus, customization is necessary for both software and hardware.

Even BT audio dongles with audio jack outputs require a customized headset to communicate with. So BT would also need some customization as well. I figure if SE has developed BT controlled toys and cameras there's no reason why they can't create an A/V stream box.

that's what a2dp is all about (for audio anyway) but as we know phones are only just starting to support that.

However another means is to copy (not stream) a file over wifi and have the receiver play the file as it receives it. This is less efficient than using a "streaming" protocol, but wifi has sufficient bandwidth. Heck, I play 2 hour mpeg movies over my home wifi link between computers. No streaming, just use the network to find the mpg file and double click it. Works fine.

So I don't see why streaming software is necessary?

I found these cat5 (wired lan) video senders, but they use wired cabling. http://www.kat5.tv/modules.html

If you had one of these plugged into your wired network, you could use your wireless network to send files from the wifi equiped P990 to the cat5 video transmitter, which would then pipe it over LAN to the receiver that's plugged into the TV. Not suitable for the car however. But ideal for home use.

There is also this from philips, but it needs special software on the pc (they don't have symbian version of this software): http://www.streamium.com/products/sl400i/features.cfm
But it's getting close. It does wifi transfers from pc to tv, what we want is wifi transfers from symbian uiq3 device to tv.

I haven't found any wifi video senders that are portable, which is the other requirement for car use.

But leaving car use out of it, if you have a wifi network in your home, there seem to be a plethora of devices that do wifi video sending. Note this is WIFI video sending we are talking, not WIRELESS video sending which operates on the same frequency but is not an actual wifi link. So while wireless video senders are common, there are also a growing number of WIFI video senders out there.

Vodafone have the P990i set to be launched Mid July but only on Business plans.

It'll have to be sim-free if your on Vodafone and don't want a business plan.

As far as I am aware the P990 will not just be available on business contracts etc, I've never seen one phone that is like that. Maybe certain retail stores would have to special order them or something though.

Also I last got told it'd be out end of may early june not july...

Pity about such a late release now. SE has lost my purchase as I needed the phone end of May at latest.
