Might aswell keep this thread alive seeing as i have a new issue.
Cycovision:
Been using my PC for months with no issues but over the last week it has started shutting off after i have been playing a certain game on it for 45+ minutes.
I can have my pc running for hours doing what ever i want on it but when ever i load this game (Football Manager 2007), after playing it for longer that 45minutes it will just shut down, no warning, no nothing.
Then to turn it back on i have to hold in the power button but it wont actually turn on until i release the power button.
Any suggestions? I considered the power pack or it over heating but it only seems to do it when im playing this specific game.
Thanks in advance |

if i can help...
i think its over heating..the graphic card when used to the fullest for long perods of time can generate quite a bit of heat...Coincidentally i experenced the same problem with the same game some months ago...i added another fan and then the problem was gone. But for a quick solution try lowering the graphics of the game...it always helps

Yeah, I'd agree with that. Remove the graphics card and make sure that the fan and heatsink are clean and that the fan can revolve freely.
If the fan is stuck, you can use an electrical solvent cleaner like c-solve to clean it thoroughly. If it's the bearing that has seized up, you're in trouble!
Well, not always Electronics catalogues like RS and Maplin may have a suitably sized replacement fan. Failing that, I've occasionally found replacement fans on ebay before so you might get lucky!
If, after cleaning, the problem still persists, it could be that the graphics card has fried or is simply on it's last legs. A good way to diagnose dodgy graphics cards is to download any graphics benchmarking software such as 3dmark05 and run the demo continuously. It doesn't matter if it runs slow, the idea is just to make the card work as hard as possible. If you get similar problems as those that you get when playing your game, there's a good chance that it is indeed the graphics card.

Hi all
I am planning on formatting my PC, and just wanted to know if my Norton Internet Security will still install properly. I bought a CD version and I still have 240 days left, so if I were to format and re-install, would it just start from where it left off previously?
Thanks

Yes, it will
It asks you for your registration details again i.e. email address, serial number etc. and sorts it all out from that information.
It usually goes smoothly unless their server is down, but you can always ring them up if the worst comes to the worst.

what is the problem and how could i solve it?
my comp is a compaq presario C300EU, was previously XP media centre but is now vista home premium

Yeah, I remember you mentioning this in another thread
Assuming that it's not the obvious, i.e. the LED has died, then it almost certainly has to be a driver problem. The only solution is to find or wait for a patch or driver update from your system's or keyboard's manufacturer I'm afraid
Many Vista drivers are currently full of silly little bugs
Not that it'll be of any help but just out of interest, did you upgrade in-place from XP media center or do a fresh install? That might cause the problem you see, but obviously something so trivial wouldn't warrant a fresh install if everything else is working fine. It'd just be handy for me to know, that's all
Sorry I can't be of more help

Cyco, on my 3RD ! Capture card now. I bought this one for the laptop, and surprise surprise it doesn't work
I have installed drivers and software and got some brief moments when the TV Input worked, but nothing from the composite in ports. No sound or video. The ebay seller took an average 4 days to reply from each message, that conveniently made the product go out of the time allowed for returns.
I have tried using the video player on it aswell but nothing. The software is WinDVR.
So here we are again, any ideas ?

To be honest, I'd need to be in front of your laptop to help with this problem because I don't know where to start!
Have you had a look at the winDVR knowledge base here?
Not sure if it'll be of any help but might be worth a look.
I'm trying to find some more info on the tuner card itself. It uses the phillips chipset so if I can dig anything out I'll let you know.
When you say the TV tuner worked for a while, what happened when it stopped working? Do you get any error messages like 'no signal' or 'no tuner present' or is it just a black screen?

tbh i cant remember although i think it was clean install :s
i got the disk free from moduslink and it just came as a disk and the documents in an envelope so not really sure...however the pc has totally died now, or maybe the charger. It had a low battery so i plugged into the charger but it wouldnt charge and then of course the battery died and now it wont turn on connected to the power or by itself as it has no battery left
