@Oluyom: I noticed you have a Samsung Omnia in your arsenal, how do you cope with the battery? My boss has one and his battery does not last a full day. To think that he chose this phone over the iPhone 3G and Xperia X1. He had all three phone to test for 3days before making a choice.
What? He had those to pick from and he chose the Omnia? Apart from the 5megapixel camera, there is nothing else that the Omnia holds against those others.
I cope well with the Omnia because it serves as a backup device for data. No calls, no SMS, and I use it only when I absolutely have to. To say that the Omnia is a disappointment is an understatement. What were Samsung thinking?

Here's a review of the Omnia. Note that though a phone supports 7mbps, if your network does not offer that speed it makes no difference.
If you want a device as backup, especially with touchscreen, get the Nokia 5800. Very good touchscreen implementation.

@Oluyom: I was as surprised as you when he picked the Samsung omnia over the other two. The following were his reasons.
The X1 fonts were too tiny. Even after increasing the fonts from the settings menu, not all fonts got enlarged. The menu fonts were still very tiny. The phone also got quite warm when making long calls. Apart from the sdb panel, all the other panels did not offer quick access to his most frequently used applications.
iPhone 3g could not compute that numbers with the +234 prefix were the same as those without them. He kept receiving text messages from "unknown" numbers because he had saved his contacts in the 08021234567 format. Also the iPhone couldn't handle his favorite applications.

This early review of the 5800 seem to say the opposite unless you have tried or played with one yourself?
GSMarena:
"Comparing the S60 5th edition to LG and Samsung touchscreen interfaces or Windows Mobile is not in favor of Nokia. And even the mere mentioning of iPhone would be devastating on the 5800 morale. This was more or less expected - there aren't absolute deal-breaker issues but the interface is obviously immature and the touch implementation inconsistent. The great asset - which could prove vital in the long run - is the familiarity, predictability and comfort of the original S60."

Still holding on to my cash until I hear something better in this regard!
Happy New Year everyone!!!

I honestly question GSMArena's submissions on this one. Dayo on the MobiNaija team, owns a 5800, and I have played with it. We are both amazed at how well the touchscreen works - text input, navigation, and simplicity.
How can anyone criticise the 5800 touchscreen with a reference to Windows mobile, of all things? The 5800 interface leaves all WinMo interfaces I have seen in the dust!
The 5800 is no iPhone, but it sure works well.
Keep your eyes on MobilityNigeria.com for Dayo's upcoming review. In the meantime, you can view a camera shoot-out involving the 5800 and 4 other phones here. The camera is certainly disappointing

Beta-testing a windows OS on a mac???
@Oluyom: I read your camera shoot-out review, and from what I can see, you have only succeeded in testing the effects of turning on/off the flash when taking macro shots.
Compare the shots taken in daylight. Portrait and Landscape, then do a close-up or macro shot in natural light. Take shots of colourful objects as opposed to shots of pictures, and let us have ur conclusion. I can bet the results will be quite different. |

Thought about it but stuck to XP because of drivers for peripherials or can it run along side XP?
@amby: New macs with Intel processors can also run Windows

Actually Apple has become an OEM for Microsoft. ALL modern (Intel) mac can run windows through an Apple supplied software called Bootcamp. I believe this is why Mac seems to be more popular these days. You enjoyed both the world of apple and MS without restrictions. Every Mac Install disc actually come with windows drivers for the hardware!
And you can dual boot Windows 7 with XP or Vista. Vista drivers also work well with Windows 7. |

Hang on to your hat, bro; you'll get those outdoor shots. Our outdoor tests are scheduled for next week, right after I post the other indoor shots taken from a distance. Yes; and I expect the results to be different, at least among the top contenders. I'm still biased towards the Samsung Omnia giving a jolly good show outdoors. And I suspect that the E90 will come right behind it.
But we'll see then.
Don't forget, though, that many of the times people will use their cameraphones will be indoors under the kind of lighting we had during those shots. I can't recount how many times one cameraphone or the other has failed me in those very scenarios.
Cheers!

Isn't it time for us to start appraising Etisalat's performance? These are my takes
1.) Their homezone is pure jibiti. It is not an homezone. It is an home-tower, because it ties you to only one tower. Which means that even in your sitting room, you may not get homezone advantage if you could connect to multiple base stations.
2.) Network is very unstable. They are trying to replicate the poor services the original 2 pelted us with.
3.) For the better part of today, the Ibadan network is DOWN! and is still down.
