you have to pay licensing fees in every country in which the patent holder has a patent. so, if those companies have patent protection in the US, sony would have to pay licenses. If they have it in china, sony would have to pay licenses there.

Most companies seek patent protection in a majority of companies through the patent cooperation treaty, which lets them file in a whole bunch of countries at once. of course, whether it is granted in each country is up to each individual country's patent office.

if sony is removing the fingerprint reader in the US only, then these companies probably only have protection in the US and nowhere else.

Great market to start with so close to the USA border!

* I still want a compact yet I have a feeling that the X Performance will be very sleek in it's size to be quite similar.

Asus spilled the beans on the new snapdragon 821

http://liliputing.com/2016/06[....]tly-faster-snapdragon-820.html

if sony does have a new flagship at ifa, it could potentially be using this new chipset or possibly the new 823

http://wccftech.com/worlds-sn[....]powered-phone-announced-month/

remains to be seen.

Esato was founded in the year 2001 and was mainly targeted at Sony Ericsson mobile phone users. We started with a couple of services offering free ringtones, grayscale logos for the Ericsson T39 and R520 models. We have expanded the service to include free color backgrounds for over 50 mobile phone models. Other popular services are the discussion forum for anyone interested in topics about mobile phones and accessories. Even if the focus was targeted at Sony Ericsson owners, we now have separate forums for owners of other brands. The most popular sections are the News, Blog, discussion forum, Free themes, free color backgrounds and a service where users can upload images from a PC and download a converted image down to their mobile phone.

Any new Ultra phones in the H2? The XA Ultra looks gorgeous only to be crippled by the mediocre MediaTek SoC and the lack of a fingerprint reader. I can't fathom why Sony insists on keep using the crappy MediaTek SoCs. The Snapdragon 650/652 SoC would have made the XA Ultra far more appealing for the price it demands.

One of my friends has the C5 Ultra with the same lackluster MediaTek SoC, and jeez, it lags like anything and had to avoid grabbing one. And now the XA Ultra goes in the same path and costs around $500? Do the Product Managers at Sony have any sense?

I don't think any of SONY's management department care about their non-Japanese customer.

Sony is on track to fall out of the top 12 smartphone makers, along with Microsoft.

Link text...

Very segmented, 7 of the 12 will grow 6% or less, the other 5 will grow 29% or better (my guess is that they are mostly Chinese, maybe one Indian)

With their current X series, then they're doing very good job in the first three objectives... but failing tremendously in the last one..

Thought it's still early to make such a judge.. but just have a look at Xperia X reviews... AP reviews says "Sony Xperia X review: Sony's latest attempt to convince you to buy a phone from someone else" and Androidbit says "Sony Xperia X review: high price for mid-range"... that's why I said the last objective is failing

Here's the data over the smartphone manufacturers. Notice the very high growth rate of many of the Chinese and one Indian. Samsung will probably stay at the top for another year or so, but LG will probably drop a few places.

There is no way Sony will be competitive when it comes to marketshare right now especially considering how commoditized the smartphone world had become.
This high pricing strategy is the only way to be competitive, the apple way. Gone are the days that phone manufacturers get a lot of their profit in numbers since there are too many competitors to grab every costumers away.

I don't think it's viable to follow the Apple pricing strategy with ANdroid. What's the differentiation Sony can offer? If they had some stellar edge, e.g. in the camera, then it would be possible, but what's their edge? Clearly not in the camera department. It used to be water-proofing, but Samsung (and others?) has that.
