There is already an interactive simulator of Aino at Sony Ericsson's site! Sadly, it doesn't work very well...

I am thinking if I should get the US Aino to upgrade from my W995a. I can get it for around $443 from SonyStyle though a friend who works there. But, I am debating if it's worth even at $443 as phones like LG Cookie, and several Samsungs with full touch screens can be had for less than $200 these days. I only reason I am considering Aino is because I am biased for SE products because of their nice styling and cool interface which is so easy to make calls because of Smart dialing, excellent call logs and most of all they sell so less which makes my phone unique and rare among friends. But I am worried I might feel stupid to have spent $443 on an half-baked phone with no 3.5mm headphone jack. |

It definitely could for many people, and you'll find it is miles a head of the W800i. For me it probably wouldn't because mobile phones never quite match mp3 players for sound quality, which is what I'm after. Most people probably wouldn't mind though.
so your Sony NW-X1050 sounds better then the Aino?
cos as you it is sound I am after.
Yes my Sony sounds better than Aino. There are very few phones in the world that can match the sound quality of a dedicated MP3 player, just like very few phones match the camera picture quality of a dedicated compact digital camera. So I don't expect any phone to be the highest quality, but for a phone Aino is very good.
My Sony Walkman is considered by reviewers to be one of the best in the world for sound quality, so I hardly think a phone would match or beat that!
A phone should have no issue matching a dedicated MP3 player, it is nothing like a dedicated camera vs. cam phone. |

You're quite wrong there. For most people a phone will be ok and some won't even be able to tell the difference, but someone who demands very good audio quality will not settle for a mobile phone. And I'm not sure if you missed it, but the Sony X series Walkmans are considered one of the best available mp3 players. Read a few reviews if you don't believe me.

Take your X-series walkman, add a dialpad and mic, see what I did there?
Their is no current technological limitation that would decrease the quality of a phone/mp3 vs a dedicated mp3. That does not mean your X-series doesn't sound better then most of the phones around, but that is because the manufacturers stick cheaper components into the phones, and not because you cannnot get excellent sound quality in a phone/mp3 player equal to any dedicated mp3 player.
Plus your X-series walkman cannot play lossless audio, so if you're a true audiophile that notices the nuances between a w995 and say your X-series I am surprised you wouldn't notice the greater difference between lossless and the lossy codecs Sony supports. |

Ah I see what you're saying now. You're right, there's no reason why they can't make a phone sound the same as an dedicated player, but they don't. It's all to do with profiteering I suspect. If they make all phones as good at playing music as a proper player, then they'll sell no mp3 players. That's why for so long Sony Ericsson wouldn't blend Cyber-shot and Walkman into one phone.
In regards to lossless audio, I'm not that serious about my audio quality. I'd like to have the best quality possible, but I prefer to have a balance between quality and file size. Lossless would mean I wouldn't be able to fit much of the music I want onto my player.

Does anyone know anything about a recall on the Aino ?
One of my customers have just been contacted by Phones4u asking them to bring their Aino back to the store as they are being recalled. They didn't say what the recall was for. Just wondering if anyone has heard anything.

A product recall mate. Where a manufacturer finds a major problem/defect and issues a recall of the item to get the problems fixed. Happens regularly with some car and toy manufacturers and is covered under warranty. Sometimes all units are recalled or more often a specific batch number based on either serial code or production date.
Would be interested if anyone knew anything about it. Have just been bought a ps3 for my birthday so was thinking of an Aino myself.
