@etaab

I find it hard to believe that haven't put more capable video recording in the K800i because of "consumer ignorance".

The fact that the W900i features it tells us its not because they aren't capable, its because it probably doesn't fit into their plan for the Cybershot range.

Hopefully a K900i may be to K800i what a W900i will be to a W800i, if you know what I mean.

Yes, of course the K800i has good imaging specs but firstly, I don't think this'll be the only Cybershot handset they release this year and secondly, I don't think expects it to be the best it has to offer this year.

@ everyone: i compare the N93 to the K800i on camera quality alone, im discounting any other smartphone / size issues.

Sure, both phones have advantages over the other, the K800i has Bestpic and the xenon flash, the N93 optical zoom and VGA video. Personally though, im not too bothered about Bestpic (i dont want to spend 10 minutes everytime i take a picture going over the results with a fine tooth-comb trying to find perfection) or the Xenon flash (i never take pictures in the dark anyway, in fact i tend to capture more videos - a LED comes in handy for that purpose, a xenon would be useless).

That's just the issue here - personal preference. I for one do not need or wan't video capability, couldn't care less. But for you (and others) it's very important which tells me you should get another phone really.

The reason I ask you not to compare N93 to K800i on account on size is just the simple fact that with such a large form factor as N93 obviously it's possible to fit a bigger camera component - and everybody who knows anything about optics will tell you larger is better.

I still agree that SE could have put better video capability and EDGE even in this phone, but not on account of the size or any of the other features. For me the flash and Best Pic will be used, a video capability how ever good won't be used.

I'm not trying to say you're wrong about stuff, more than that maybe you're just looking at the wrong product this time. If you don't mind the size of the N93 and care this much about video and camera - you get optical zoom in N93 aswell - buy it! I know I would...

Beyond everyones preferences the capabilities of vga videorecording and best quality possible of taken images should be available, there is no such thing like customers ignorance. After all we are quested to pay an amount of 400-450 ¤ for this phone,it should be better equipped from the start because it can be directly compared to other current handsets (ex. Nokia 6280) with a lot cheaper prices.

After most people check the camera quality, they check the video quality.

On the K800 it is BELOW the average for these days for an imaging handset. Its not like QVGA is that good or special, most are on CIF these days, while the K800 is on qcif.

From an SE point of view wont this result is less sales until this heavenly handycam phone is released.

SE know that the average man on the street doesn't even know the difference between CIF and QCIF (go and ask a random 10 people on the street and I bet only 1 out of 10 - if that - knows what the hell you're on about) and it's only enthusiasts who will cry out for the better quality video recording.

Lol yes, they won't know. But if You would ask if they want 320x240 video recording or 176x144 video recording, the answer would be just simple

I have read the thread : -

"May is going to be unexpectedly exciting with two Sony Ericsson product presentations on the 11th and 18th of that month, the second one being “the sh**”, an internal source confirmed (the Handycam?)...."

so, let's just wait for those dates to come and see what will be announced, then we can decide on buying the K800 or the Handycam phone...

Like I said, does he know something we don't?

4 phones were announced on May 18th. None handycam though.

@ Ruudfood - you're absolutely right, SE know the average man cannot tell the difference between QCIF video, CIF and QVGA video when it is only played on the phones screen, but does that not mean they're simply cashing in on peoples ignorance to the fact they're buying an already out of date handset regarding some features of the phone ? thats what it smells like to me. As for more expensive technology being used, why should it not ? the K800i is capable of capturing and handling 3.2mp images, which are on average around 800Kb in size, so why cant the K800i capture higher video resolutions ? my guess is, they've simply used a slightly faster chipset inside the phone, with a little more memory and up to date image processing software that can handle the higher file sizes, but have not increased the hardware enough to handle capturing and encoding videos in resolutions higher than QCIF. That is the only reason i think is possible as to why SE have done this. I think the proof is in the fact the K800i can playback high quality videos, but cannot capture them, because encoding videos is harder to perform than playing them back.

The K800i smells like an old phone to me, and ive not even seen one yet.

@ goldenface - i dont think its anything to do with the Cybershot range. Even Cybershot digital cameras have higher video recording resolutions, so why not the first Cybershot branded phone ? Also, the W900i records in a higher resolution, so why not the K800i ? could it possibly be because the W900i is hardware accelerated whereas the K800i uses old technology ? a very real possibility.

@ fimpiel - its not that video recording is the main feature i want in a handset, in fact its one part of the phone im not completely focusing on. But, what i do consider as important to me is value for money. The Samsung D600 has a smaller form factor than the K800i, and possibly the K750i due to the slide taking up quite a bit of space. However, if SE's latest phone is just as big if not bigger, then why does it not have higher resolutions ? the D600 records in QVGA, with high fps and bitrates, so why not just give the K800i the same ? For me, the K800i will simply not be value for money, because when it is released it'll handle 3.2mp pictures just as slow as the K750i handled its 2mp pictures upon its release, a big guess but an educated one at that.

I agree with etaab, video recording even on w900 is futile and the result is far from good so it's not a big deal,if you want HQ videos you can buy minidv or wait at least 2 years before video quality will be nice on phones

ROFL@ me - I just ordered a N80 =) I'll get the K800i too, don't worry guys, but I played with a friends N80 today, and S60 is cool, WiFi even cooler. And I cant wait any more for a new phone, MUST.HAVE.TOY...

Now I don't have to lug around my laptop in the apartment to check mail or do some simple web browsing, I will have to bring the power adaptor though, the phone eats battery faster than Finnish people can say "Sauna". =) Wish me luck on my Nokia endeavour, first one since 1999. I'll probably end up selling it when I get the K800i, realising just how big the N80 really is. =) But the gadget freak in me is having a small party now. =)

if k800 had been released by the time it was announced there would not be any problems but i´m afraid that due to the release delay the phone will be already outdated or wont be such a good competitor by the time it comes out. The video quality is low considering the other features of the phone, the headphones that come bundled with it suck, only 64mb of memory, not symbian but its got the size of a smartphone, joystick (a problem for few), no led light, expensive and etc...
