Yeah, burn it and use Norton Ghost Instead!

Seriously, I can't help you with this I'm afraid because I've never used eRecovery before. Maybe somebody else can shed some light?

... what a cruel helper you are!!!
Norton Ghost really that good? I read about it but didn't believe it, cause I hate Norton antivirus...
aaaahahahah (I actually actually thought about filming the "notebook" on fire and posting it on youtube! did you ever visit acer's support pages for downloads???)

thanks, man [addsig]

HeHeHe!

I'm no fan of Norton products either but Ghost really is excellent. The only downside is that you need a floppy drive to use it (it has it's own OS that boots from a floppy disk) but I think the latest versions allow you to use USB floppy drives or a CD instead for notebooks.

I actually own an acer notebook myself but it's getting on a bit now and so didn't come with eRestore. Besides, I've got to that god-awfull stage of geekiness where I don't use restore applications anymore, I just keep all of my important files on seperate hard drives and do fresh reinstalls when things go wrong.

The acer site is surprisingly shit considering that their computers are generally pretty good!

Hi Cycovision!

I just need some help please...

I am planning on restoring and securing my friend's laptop because it's in a terrible condition - but, I just found out that she can't find any of the disks that came with the laptop. I just wanted to know from you, if there was any way I could format + re-install Windows on her laptop without the recovery disk? I would tell her to phone up the manufacturer (Fujitsu) but she will be leaving for holiday in about a weeks time.

Thanks mate,

The only thing you could try would be use an ordinary XP install disk (which is still valid) and use a key changer afterwards (before you activate it over the net or phone) to change the key to the one shown on the sticker attached to the laptop.

This is actually legal and is the only way nowadays to enable you to get all of the required updates. M$ have tightened up their security so much that it makes doing a reinstall an absolute nightmare!

However, if the laptop came with a restore disk, there's no guarantee that this method will work, since some manufacturers have special license keys that require the exact, customised version of the OS to be reinstalled on that particular machine.

So I'd get the restore disks if I were you!

Because you need the upgrade edition of Vista rather than the standard edition, like this one here

Either that, or use M$'s online upgrade service, which costs about the same anyway.

Your only option now is to either wipe one of your hard drives or buy a new hard drive and install to that, unless you want to shell out more money

Freezing up like that is usually caused by the CPU overheating. Burgaz had the same problem a while back, so I'll cut and paste my reply to him because I'm lazy

'Sounds more like the CPU is overheating to me. Take the side off and give everything a bloody good clean, particularly the heatsink and fan on the CPU. I use a hoover to get the dust out!

If that doesn't do it, you might need to take the heatsink and fan off and apply some thermal grease to the surface of the CPU. You can get thermal grease easily on-line.'

Just be careful when you remove the heatsink and fan because it's easy to break the little plastic clips that hold the whole thing on and if that happens, you've got serious problems.

EDIT:

and by the way i forgot about the VISTA, i gave it to StrizloW800 and it showed the button UPGRADE...

Well, I've never seen that before personally but I don't disbelieve you It might be something to do with your version of XP. Although, Microsoft reckon that any 32 bit version of XP can be upgraded to Vista Ultimate as detailed in this page here:

http://www.microsoft.com/wind[....]buyorupgrade/upgradepaths.mspx

Do you have a 'genuine' version of XP or has it failed the validity test at some point?

I find it strange how M$ still sell upgrade versions of Vista as well as clean install versions though?

Errrm... thanks, I think

Only joking! Glad to be of help

If you are going to run Vista though, I'd get at least another 512Mb of RAM in there first. Vista will run like a bag of poo with only 512Mb, even with all of the fancy bits turned off

@maggflodd

Jawol, mein fuhrer!
