Anyone planning to get a new phone this Xmas? What are you planning to get? Why?

I just did about two weeks ago. Got myself (wait for it)... a Nokia E90! Also got a Sony Ericsson T650 for official use some weeks back.

Yes; I miss some things on the old communicator range, but as has been said, its still the best Symbian OS device out there for now.

I had the firmware updated to the latest version, which comes with the following listed features:

* Much faster orientation switching (open/close lid etc)
* Nokia Maps 2.0 now built-in
* Download! application updated (v 3.1.736)
* Cosmetic upgrade to Music player
* Update for Flash Lite 3 and Flash video in Web browser
* Wi-Fi improvements
* New baseline for VoIP
* Realplayer supports FLV format (i.e FLV files can be played directly like MP4)

The T650 more or less is for calls (and SMS), because it holds my primary line.

@Oluyom, congratulation, that's wonderful news E90 great ,it's a great fone, the only defect i've observed since i got the E90 november last year is that about seven months of useage or so the outer paint coatings starts to peel off. especially the back battery casing paints. sad though, but that doesn't affect the fantastic functions of the fone.

You must've bought an after-market housing. OEM specs housing for the E90 would set you back at least N10k The P1i housing costs N8k

@Oluyom, curiously I though u've become lees fond of Nokia, why did u now invest so much on Nokia in the E90?

I've downloaded and installed the latest firmware, yesterday it has greatly improved that fone's performance it is now a smooth transition from the cover to desktop and vis versa of any currently opened/running program

@all, about the peeling of my E90, the attached pic was what i did to mine when it started to peel, it has stopped now.

Yeah, O'Yom: Why did you relocate to Symbian Boulevard? Thought you were having a ball in Windows Mobile Avenue and naturally expected you to move up to Windows Mobile Boulevard...aka HTC Touch Pro?

@area & brym: Good question there, though with this caveat: I had nothing against Nokia, at least nothing that could be regarded as a deal-breaker.

That aside, here are my answers:

1. Cost: I needed to upgrade, but the WM phones that met my specs cost an arm and a leg. The Touch Pro costs over N110k. The E90 set me back only N79k.

2. Java support on all the WM I have used is poor: i780, i900, Treo 700P, Sprint Mogul.

That means my faourite apps like instant messaging and Opera Mini were a pain to use. It isn't really a deal-breaker, as there are native app alternatives.

The cost, for me, was the deciding factor in this case. The i780 was a steal at the price it sold. If Samsung throws more of that my way, I'm game!

3. The recent firmware update for the E90 got me drooling, especially the ability to watch videos embedded in webpages - especially now that there are flat monthly data plans on GSM networks. It is amazing on that gorgeous inner display (the E90's display is as good as it gets!).

Okay guys, there it is - my public confession

Oluyom, correct politician, i could ave mistaken ur post for one of Obama's speeches when he encountered a difficult question, you sabi how to sweet tongue person. answer is well stated n i've accepted u back into the nokia fold (look at me as if i could really tell u not to buy the fone that u wish to buy).

any how I went to complain the other day at Mtn friendship center that my download and upload statics counter on my MTN 3G f@stlink page read that i've used only 1.72 GB and uploaded 109.32MB, when we checked their data counter of my gsm line on their customer service computer it read that i had already consumed 3GB, does anybody in this forum have an idea what must have happen? because it beats my imagination, though they promised me that they (mtn) will investigate it, that i should check back.

see for urself

Me, Obama? Yaaaay!!!

I'm not sure how your 3G data statistics got mixed up that way. Faulty metre? Or is the MTN system lying? No idea.

The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) was reported in the papers today to be planning tariff increase for our phone lines.

They blame multiplicity of taxes and levies by all layers of Government, attacks by communities and area boys, the poor state of electricity etc for the increase. In addition, they are planning staggered tariffs for different parts of the community based on the above complaints.

I quite agree with them and I belief that our government should be blamed for any increase in telephone tariffs.
