I'm baffled right now, I thought WWAN denotes a broadband internet connection that should deliver speeds of up to 2.4mbps?
I recently acquired a ZoomMobile 3G wireless PC card with 14-days of free unlimited internet access.
When I connect, the connection manager tells me I am connected to a WWAN. There's no way to determine if the connection is EVDO or 1X but the CC person swore to me that they were running EVDO.
However, my connection speed is the worst I've ever used. I've been connected now for 19mins but my yahoo inbox still has not completely loaded. when I used netmeter to monitor my connection speed I was getting 0.8 - 1.2kbps.
Is this possible? Is this what Reltel/Zoom have been making so much noise about? I plan to take the card back to their office today and ask for a full refund, or else......... |

@ambyzown: Pele! Let me contribute further.
Etisalat touts EDGE at speeds of "180kbps upwards". I slotted in an Etisalat SIM in my GPRS-EDGE-3G-3.5G enabled phone this morning. I got an "E" icon on the screen, signifying the presence of an EDGE network.
Excitedly, I typed in a Etisalat's own WAP portal address, and.... for upwards of 10 minutes it still wasn't loaded. Eventually, the connection timed out. I tried another, and another... same results. Even MTN GPRS better pass.
Of course, this may be a local issue, as I know someone else who says he got very good speeds at another location in Lagos.

I agree with you, MTN currently offers the best and most reliable data service of all the mobile phone companies.
I went to the Reltel office to complain about the poor speeds and was told that upgrade work was in progress hence the slow speed. Lets see if it improves after the "upgrade"
@Coola: How is the connection speed at your end? are you zooming? |

Promise of speed means absolutely nothing in Nigeria's internet connection. The major problem is not the bandwidth at your end, it is their own bandwidth connection to the net.
You will be shocked that the internet connection to which they are connected are probably some few megabits and this is shared to ALL their subscribers. By the time 50 to 100 people are browsing on their network, the thing crawls to a halt.
Any service provider that still relies on VSAT, as most of them are, can not provide good speed because of satellite latency and bandwidth problem. VSAT is good for small scale networks. What they need is high speed fiber optic cables, but who will persuade them to put money in that? |

MTN seems able to cope better than others because it acquired one of these mini super-ISPs based on VI - VGC Communications Ltd. Its the infrastructure of this ISP that powers its data services now.
Good move, if you ask me!

So what stops the other telecom companies from borrowing a leaf from MTN by acquiring one of the many mini-super ISP's? There are so many of them out there seeking for patronage.
I particularly don't see why Glo shouldn't provide the best data service being a a gateway operator. |

None that i know of at the moment, but who knows? Moves may be on already.

Beats me too. I know they were pushing plans to complete an undersea cable similar to SAT-1. I hope they complete it soon. Glo held out so much hope, but have thrown so many subscribers into disappointment.

I also notice the Glo lack of innovation of late.It seems they are consentrating on other countries.Hope they wake up.

@uchrik: If Glo's problem was limited to merely a lack of innovation, it wouldn't be so bad.
What's really troubling is that the Glo network is apparently falling apart. Getting calls through is tough. Access to customer care by phone almost impossible (and Glo is a phone company). GPRS/3G data in many locations now almost unusable.
This is a shadow of the Glo that we used to know. It is quite sad.

So, what is wrong with GLO? Complacence, biting more than it can chew (Ghana anyone?), what?
The customer care services is a major scandal. I have been unable to get the customer care for months now. In fact I ditched my immediate past glo line because of Customer care issue. I needed to get internet on the line, but I was told (at a GLO office!!!) that I have to call CC first to provision my phone and that task proved impossible, so I threw away the line. I'm about to throw away the current one once I exhaust the credit on it.
So long GLO, we once loved you! |

AND watch out, Glo is always reluctant to honour the terms of their promo. I had to drag them to NCC recently.
