Its not about being broken its about system improvement which has moved forward and functionality also when 1.6 was on the X10 and everyone else was on 2.1 there were apps in the market that didn't even work with the X10 because of the old and deceased Android version it was on.

You are right not being able to install latest applications really suck.
Apart from that I agree with @Miss UK
Don't mess with the software if you are happy

HUGE problem!
So usually I have my phone at about 85-90% brightness, and it lasts a day. Barely, but it does.
However, I turned it to 100% and I've lost 7% in about 20 min, and it's almost only been in the standby. The time I actually used it was to send ONE sms.
Is this a common problem or am I just unlucky?

Technology always moves forward, it doesn't go backwards or sit static, if it sits static its dead and done.
I don't think some people understand the concept of why newer Android is best, it's not only being able to use the latest and greatest applications but theres also system improvements.
Heres an example for you between 2.1 and 2.3 specifically to do with video and the sound recording and why the 2.3 Gingerbread update is obviously good and why I'm looking forward to it.
The Gingerbread update will improve audio in video recording.
Right now the audio bitrate is 32 Kbps with 8.00 Khz Sampling rate.
With Gingerbread this is now 128 Kbps with 44.1 Khz Sampling rate. .
Also there is less video compression in Gingerbread. Right now average video bitrate is 8000 Kbps. With Gingerbread 2.3 it is 10000 Kbps average.
Roll on 2.3 I say

@ roanmy : the battery life does suck on the x10.... Requires at least twice a day charging with minimum use. To prolong it to a day and a half - turn off data, wi fi, keep screen on minimum tolerable brightness and make sure you have the display sleep option to the minimum.

Best app I have found to manage data on the X10 is APNdroid.
Put the widget on your home screen and switch on when you need it and off when you dont, it does greatly increase battery life with all Android devices.
Heres the app

@Oogamous
I've never had any (serious) battery issues before the dual-touch update...
Would it perhaps be fixable by re-flashing? Or is this just the way it is?

@ I don't think re flashing would help as i too have experienced a drop in battery life after the dual touch update. Maybe the screen is more power hungry now. And I am hardly running any widgets either.

Since I uninstalled moxier, timescape and other crappy apps that I don't use I have about two days battery life during moderate use.
I think one of the best apps is Settings Profile Lite. I set to to turn on WiFi when I am home and turn it off when I'm not.
Love it. Greatly saves power.

i use my phone constantly and have no issues with battery life at all. i charge my phone to 100% every night regardless but when i go to bed i'm lookin at 45-65%. that's with bluetooth, gps, and wifi on. I spend a lot of time texting, at least 90 minutes on the phone talking (all day long that is), surfing the web, streaming vids, and playing games (guns and glory is addicting).
I love the battery life on my x10 and couldn't be happier with it considering what i do. my brightness is set to auto adjust though.

^Then you probably have an old firmware. I haven't had any problems before the last update, and auto-brightness is no longer available there. =P

indeed i have old firmware. it's the straight 2.1 update with no MT update after it.
I am curious if multi-touch will remain in the 2.3 update? since the MT isn't native on the x10 but an SE software mod it seems like (i may be mistake). any thoughts?

The dual-touch features will still be there in the 2.3 update. I'd bet my my house on it.
Battery life, general phone speed, flash in the browser, wifi tethering and apps2SD should be the major improvements on the OS side. I've not played with the new timescape and watered down mediascape yet so I can't say for definite if they are improvements but they look good as far as I can tell.

almost forgot about getting flash in the browser... awesome. now let's hope i actually get the update in a reasonable time instead of how i've been waiting forever for the MT update.
