@dawn: we have had that arguement here b4 abt the money invested for licences, infrastructure etc but the plain truth is that bcos ncc is so lax, they can bilk thier few initial subscribers of thier cred via dropped calls, unconnected calls being charged, etc. As we have gisted here b4, mtn made 9 figure profits in thier first 6 months. This is in an industry where one usually breaks even on investments after years! But not to be pessimistic, they might do something great. BUT, if as u said, they are taking the "great brains" (gag!!!!) from the existing telecom companies then we might just see the same "great" ideas regurgitated from thier old companies instead of fresh new ones! |

@ abubakar i agree wit u a bit.but lookin at it closely there is really no new sub 2 exploit or cheat.etisalat has 2 get it right from day 1.mayb dats y they took so long 2 launch service.

I had the same impression once but have since seen the average naijaman' propensity towards multiple hand sets. When starcomms, celtel and multilinks rolled out thier 2k - 3k phones, 80%+ (my estimate) already had a line. A few even already had a line on that very same network but couldnt resist a "cheap" phone deal passing without having a hand in it. Believe me, if etisalat does free browsing for an undisclosed period, lots of people on this very forum would rush for the hardware necessary to take advantage. Even if the connection is erratic. Once they've weaned us off our previous provider, made us buy a data card/ dongle at a premium then they start giving the same level of services the rest give. That is, if the rests' services hvnt floundered. It isnt rhetoric, as mtn used a similar strategy over glo (the once premier mobile data provider) |

@abubabakar i totally agree with u on dis.but i think we should b positive about etisalat.and we should not rush 2 hook up wit dem no matter how good their offer is.we should verify from those dat have subscribed to their network b4 we join dem.in dat case if is bad we will know.i did dat for visafone.i looked for some1 dat was using visafone's internet service, and asked how it was.he told me rheir service was messed up in abj.so i found out about reltel and heard their sevice was ok.dats wher i am 2day.and is fairly ok.

@dawny: let me ask u this: if etisalat was offering, say, free browsing from 12am to 6am for its 1st 1000 subscibers, would u latch on as fast as possible or would u wait for someone's critic on it? They always have a way of drawing in even the most stubborn of us! |

I hope the ETISALAT people are listening to the whinings here. Glo had their breakthrough with per second billing. Without per second billing Glo will not be where they are today.
ETISALAT needs something similar to Glo's per second strategy and even more. When Glo came, many people have had a line for less than two years, it was not too difficult to change. But now many people have had their lines for 5 years and more, so ETISALAT needs some heavy incentive to attract subscribers. And free browsing will not do. That will attract about 2% of phones users.
The artisans, who are the bulk of phone owners know nothing about browsing and text. They know only about hello hello. So ETISALAT needs incentive on calls. Reduced tarrif is their only hope. Extended family and friends, deep off-peak cuts, bundled free phones, reduced gprs and sms tarrifs, reasonably large coverage at launch, combined with good pr will help them. |

I am resolved not to worry my head about Etisalat's strategy. Most of these guys don't listen to consumers anyway. We almost always end up disappointed. When they launch, we'll taste the pudding and see if its worth salivating over.

if i get to 3g coverage zone and i'm using my non 3g phone which max speed of connection is 115kps will connect at that maximum rate, since i could still go up to 400kps if i had the right gear
there is a God and he's got mad love for me!!! |

@2tek: Since MTN's EDGE network aint completed yet, you can only expect average GPRS speeds for now, about 40kbps.

@adru: i wouldnt say that 98% of nigerian subs are artisans but even so, the remaining 2% provide much more than 2% of the profits, hence, why its necessary for them to focus on giving techie services. As an added punch, the allusion or illusion of having a superior network, offering services that the artisan wouldnt dream of using gives more allure to the company. Glo's per sec billing ddnt do it alone. Thier initially stable data services against vmobiles csd helped turn heads.
Off to another topic, abt a yr ago, i was hearing serious gist out of ncc abt general service interconnectivity, incl mms. Then silence. Now that vid calls have come into play, are we going to still have these old 2.5G services still limping? When do u think we will be able to make vid calls across networks? 2020? |

I do make video calls from my glo line to mtn lines

@Dawny: Yes I currently work in Benin.
I wouldn't touch starcomms with a 40ft pole if I were u. Virtually everyone I know who bought starcomms for their internet is complaining right now. I currently use Multilinks but I have some problems with browsing here as I got my wireless card from their Lagos office and their customer care center isn't functional yet. |

@Artwales: If u are able to make video calls, then how come u can't browse at 3g speeds.
I disagree that the so called elite phone users who are data aware only constitute 2% of the mobile phone market. You only need to visit portals like Prodigits or Nairaland to realise the extent to which Nigerians have embraced the data culture.
Oh yes attractive data service is the way to go for the new entrants into an already saturated telecommunications market.

To the best of my knowledge, neither glo or MTN has officially launched 3G in ibadan, so i guess they can not be held responsible for the inefficiency of their services yet. I do make video calls from my glo line to my wife's mtn line regularly and the cost is abt N50/min. The funny thing is,i am yet to meet anyone else who can make such calls.
