i went into 2 02 shops today, both had different answers. in the first one, i asked what will happen to the people who buy the iphone, and fail the credit check? he then told me that 02 would definitley be able to do something because these people had purchased the iphones outright, and that there may be an unlock code but he doesnt know fo sure until they start selling them. the second, when asked the same question, said that upon failing the credit check (which will apparently be more leniant allowing more people to pass) id have to return the iphone, because when you buy it, you are in the knowledge that the iphone is only available on the tariffs shown instore, and that you accept this when buying the iphone. when i told him that i could unlock it with software i could get online, he said that the uk iphones would have different software than the us version and that the unlocks probably wont even work. both of them though didnt have a clue about the law on having to provide unlock codes in the EU. guess all we can do is wait for the release and learn from what happens with other customers

Hi gimmeiphone

Interesting to hear what you were told just surprised neither mentioned the fact you could get a PAYG iPhone Sim card. The first person certainly sounds more like the person that new what he was talking about the second IMO doesn't have a clue as what he has said is just wrong especially as we know there will be PAYG iPhone Sim cards so you are not restricted to only the announced tariffs and it has been established you are indeed buying your iPhone outright.

If the fair usage on the data is 200MB, that is balls, because I used the Edge on it the other day and it racked up 5MB in about 10 mins just browsing, the Ipohne is a data whore so i hope they sort that out or they are gonna have some seriously pissed off customers.

Wonder what the PayG tariff will be because data is a necessity with this thing.

I honestly cannot describe the quality of the web browsing, it puts all other browsers to shame, and I quite liked Opera 4 beta 2.

Safari blows them all away, the Rich HTML is awesome.

There are a lot of things to come out in the wash.
Watch Out for our Upcoming Retail Store!!

I couldn't agree more 200mb is nothing more than a joke and why i would only really consider using it over WiFi where possible. I have never liked Opera as have been using a Safari based browser for over a year and although i am sure it's not as polished as the newer version in the iPhone it is in a different league to Opera IMO.

@Dogmann

Do you have any infomation on what sort of PAYG tariff the iPhone will have. Will you get free messages, calls, data etc depending on what you top up, or do you think you will get none of this and just spend your credit.

Say you used it to check emails and browse the net say 10 minutes a day, how much data is that? Do you think the o2 £7.50 data will cover that? Will be getting an iPhone and dropping my contract, and we have free wifi at uni so doubt i'd need much, don't get all this mb stuff in phones lol.

i have no idea where you people seem to think iphone will accept an o2 prepay sim or there will be a iphone prepay sim available for this phone. The answer is plain simply No. that it is not going to be available for the iphone a simple prepay only sim. That is confirmed from within O2.

That's a bit like saying how long is a piece of string, to many variables for a accurate answer, how big are the E-Mails how Data intensive are the web sites see what i mean hard to give a straight answer. But if you stick to mainly using WiFi you can avoid the risks of suddenly getting hit with a big bill.

If you are going to be using it on a special iPhone PAYG Sim i would just try and restrict your use to WiFi as the dangerous thing is IMO if you go over the 200MB limit just how much is it going to cost for the extra usage. Miss UK reported using data by accident and it cost her £26. If it is till the £2 per MB for anything over 200MB you could rack up a hefty bill quite easily IMO if you can just stick with WiFi as especially for browsing it will be so much faster anyway. Remember E-Mail traffic and data use is counted in both direction so it's not just want you send but also what you receive. If your E-Mails are not that urgent just save your £7.50 and stick to WiFi.

@Mr Miyagi

Well that's different to what i have been told twice direct from 02 and if correct what happens if your buy your iPhone and fail a credit check then?

As you have bought and paid for a phone you then can't use so will 02 then unlock it for you? obviously for a fee of course.

cant comment on the credit check part, however all the information regarding the iphone is available on the o2.co.uk website and no mention of a prepay sim, i think they would have mentioned it by now.

Thanks for the reply, that is probably best, so will do that as uni provides it and i spend most of my time there. Just thought it would be best to go back to pay and go that way i can only spend what credit i have.

Can someone not just send O2 an email as regards the Unlock and PAYG sim question?, then we would have a definitive response in black & white rather than the mixed messages coming out from a variety of sources.

they have no plans to launch a pay as you go sim, if they did, they would mention it on the o2 website, where everyone who is wanting to know about the iphone on o2 is being directed to. and unlocking it,, if it is going to be available most likely it will be available to unlock at a high fee

@Mr Miyagi

I was quoted a price of £15 @ an 02 Shop and £9.99 buying it direct by phone is this the normal price for a PAYG Sim then?
